**PittPurple**/Edinburgh hotel recs

From your location location, it looks like your in Edinburgh...my sister is considering going there in April (from Reading, England) by herself for a weekend and looking for a hotel.

Do you (or anyone else) have a rec for a nice hotel, good location, under $150/night on weekends? TIA

Re: **PittPurple**/Edinburgh hotel recs

  • We just stayed at the Radisson Blu over Christmas and it was great, right on the Royal Mile, safe, walking distance to the train station.

  • Several of the International Nesties have stayed at the Radisson Blu and have really enjoyed it, it might be over her price range though. For work, I've used the Best Western Bruntsfield a few times and it's okay - good location on a ton of bus lines and an easy walk to the centre of town. A friend just stayed at the Apex Grassmarket and said it was nice, but it might be out of her price range. Also, Grassmarket is 'the place' for hen and stag nights so it might be a different experience on the weekends! I've used Ten Hill Place Hotel a couple times for work and it was right around her price range as well. It's a great location right in Newington.

Usually when our family comes to visit, they stay with us or at a B&B. There are a lot of lovely B&B's in the area, would your sister consider that?

If there's any she's found on her own, I'm happy to tell you about the locations - if I'm not on here, you can always page me on the International Nesties board.

  • I'm not sure if you are set on a hotel, we rented a flat while we were in Edinburgh through homeaway.com - we found a great 1 bd in the old city for only $80/night.  It was about a 10 minute walk to the royal mile...it was a great area and it met all of our needs...I'd definitely recommend.  Link to the accommodation is in my trip review if you are interested: http://stephsfavoritethings.com/2012/02/21/an-adventure-to-scotland-ireland-and-england/

  • My ILs have stayed at Ten Hill Place and Radisson Blu, both are nice.  Ten Hill Place is a straight shot, no more than 10 minutes walking distance from the Royal Mile but I imagine the price is considerably less than Radisson Blu.

I would avoid anything on Cowgate since it becomes such a ruckus of partying every single night of the week.  It's basically hostel and filthy clubs row.

Oh, oh, tell her to eat a caramel shortbread from CQ's Cafe on Grassmarket.  Best freaking thing ever!

  • I've stayed in a variety of places in Edinburgh, including a B&B, two different self-catering apartments, and a hotel. Your sister should definitely look into rates for apartments as well as B&Bs, but if she'd rather stay in a hotel, there's a Holiday Inn Express that is near the University of Edinburgh and about 10 minutes off the Royal Mile that is pretty much like every other Holiday Inn Express--clean, efficient, breakfast included, etc.
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions.  My brother actually works for a Radisson Blu here in the US so he can get discounts for them internationally.  I'm not sure which weekend she was considering going, but the rates at Blu where $250/nt and my brother was unable to get a discount for that particular wknd.  Too funny that it's so highly suggested.

My sister is definitely the type to do hotel only (I don't blame her traveling by herself), but I'll look into Ten Hill and Holiday Inn Express for her. Thanks!
