feeling . . . not right

I am not a regular here, but thought that some of you ladies might have some advice.  I have been feeling progressively worse over the past three years.  At first I thought it was just post pardum depression transitiong into regular depression and my Dr. was more than happy to write a prescription.  Well, I think there is something else going on and the depression may just be a sympton.  She did do some blood work, but I think she mainly tested my thyroid and whatever else is standard.  I feel BLAH.  I am stressed, anxious, depressed, sensitive.  I have a hard time enjoying anything.  I have severe fatigue and have a hard time finding energy to do anything.  My house is trashed and I can't bring myself to tackle it which just makes me feel worse.  I have a hard time remembering things, I guess I would say "foggy" thinking.  I have no sex drive whatsoever.  Now, out of nowhere I am extremely gassy.  My diet has not changed in the least so I have no idea what could be causing this.  On top of this, I look terrible.  My complexion is dull, there are circles under my eyes and I have clogged pores and painful acne on my chin and jaw all the time.

Any ideas ladies?  I feel like I'm being a bad employee, bad wife, bad mother, bad friend and don't know how to fix it.  I feel 50 and am only 34.

Re: feeling . . . not right

  • I don't have ideas of what it might be.  See a psychologist/psychiatrist.  If something is going on there they may be able to help you dig to the bottom of it.  Besides the obvious time and money, there's not a lot to lose.  I don't have food allergies, but some of the symptoms do sounds like they could be related to food allergies you could have developed as an adult.  I'd check over on the food allergy board and/or try a diet where you eliminate things.  Check what happens if you eliminate dairy.  Check wheat...

A friends of mine had an incredible change of life after eliminating dairy.  Her face, dark circles and acne went away.  She didn't have all the same sympotoms as you though.

    Good luck!

  • I had almost all the symptoms you listed and I ended up having hypothyroidism. I know you mentioned they tested your thyroid but I didn't notice if you mentioned the outcome. Once I got on Synthroid and my levels straightened out I felt like a new woman.

  • I'd say get the results from your doctor regarding your thyroid. Ask to be tested for allergies. Ask to be tested for anything you can. Rule number 1 is always rule out the medical reason for these sorts of issues.

If there is nothing there, I would highly recommend seeing a psychiatrist, and maybe right now as well. Medication for depression/ anxiety/ everything you listed really is a science and an art of finding the right med or mix of meds for the person. Most physicians just don't have that extensive of a background is psychopharmacology.

I hope you can get the bottom of what's going on.

  • i felt like this when i was going through a very difficult bout of depression.  if your blood work is all coming back clear, PLEASE see a psychiatrist.  if your primary care doctor is worth their salt, they will recommend a good one to you.

a psych would not only be able to properly diagnose you, but also prescribe the correct medication and therapy treatment plan.  he/she would also follow up appointment to check the effectiveness of said meds and plan.   like a PP said, mental health meds (and therapy styles!) are very 'trial-and-error,' and it may take a few tries before you find out what works best for you.

  • You've been to a primary care doc right? I would see a GI doc just to be on the safe side, especially if you have had a sudden change in what you can eat. It could be allergies, but just go to make sure. I was super tired, dark circles, adverse to lactose and other foods pretty suddenly...I need my gallbladder removed. Again, I am a drastic example, but exhaust all options. It is likely something simple.

Is your vitamin D low? that also causes fatigue..or lack of iron

See your doctor and pester him/her until you feel you are listened to.  I am not a fan of hypochondria, but women tend to ignore things too long that end up serious. I am an excellent example.  This is not meant to scare you - and obviously I am hypersensitive - but in addition to seeing an endo and a psych, make sure you have a full work up with your PCP to rule out anything more serious.

  • PP all have very good suggestions, and while I don't know much about most of the possible problems they brought up,I would like to second the suggestion to get tested for food allergies.  I did for chronic sinus issues, and found I was allergic to wheat.  I remember sitting on the couch one night thinking that feeling like total $hit must just be my normal, because it didn't matter how much sleep I got I was contantly tired, sore, irritable, and bloated.  Now, after cutting it out, I have never felt better.  And my family can tell within hours of my ingesting it, because everything about me just...changes.

I am not saying this is your problem, as I have no idea, but it is something you shouldn't rule out.

  • Food allergies are definitely a possibility so I would go ahead and have a test done to know for sure or rule it out.

I had a lot of these symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, depression, cystic acne, among other things like stomach issues, headaches, joint pain, etc.) for almost a year that kept getting worse.  I generally just felt awful all the time, and my symptoms were all over the place so my doctors ran a ton of tests finding nothing.  It finally dawned on me that it could be food so I went to an allergist and discovered I have newly developed food allergies.

Good luck.  I hope you find out what it is and start feeling better soon.

I am just curious what you are allergic too?  Cystic acne is one of my biggest signs that I got "glutened" some how, and I am now fearing cheese and yogurt are causing it too.  90% of people will insist that acne can not be caused by food allergies, yet I know it does.  Like I said, jsut being nosy!

  • I would say do a diet make over.

Take a good look at your diet, write down everything that you eat in a day. EVERYTHING.

    1. If you do not already drink 5-8 glasses of water a day, start.

    2. Cut out processed foods.

    3. Cut down on your dairy and meat intake.

    4. Cut out white food- sugar, pasta, flour, bread-if it's white do not eat it.

    5. start exercising, even if it's a walk or a workout video every day or every other day, just start moving.

Take a good multi vitamin if you do not eat your full serving of fruits and vegetables..you should actually have your vitamin and mineral levels tested so you have a starting point of what you are lacking, maybe after you change to a healthier eating lifestyle you can have it reassessed.

A lot of people get depressed because they do not have enough magnesium, vitamin D, or B or whatever..our bodies are so complex we need the right amount of many vitamins and minerals to help us stay healthy.  Also the preservatives, additives, hormones, processing that is taking place today in our food is NOT NATURAL and not healthy if you have access to a local farm and/or market buy your food from there...just make sure they are organic growers.

    good luck!

I could have written the OP post a few years ago.  In fact, this is something that I had struggled with my entire adult life and couldn't find an answer up until recently.

A few years ago, it was really bad.  I was exhausted all the time and depressed to the point that my DH was like WTH is wrong with you?  He was understandably upset because I had 2 small children and could barely function to care for them so he would often have to come home from work and care for them beause I just couldn't.

I had dealt with a "real" depression before but this was different and it was awful because no one could help me.  My dr tested me for a bunch of stuff and it all came back negative.  Finally, I mentioned it to my gyn at my check-up.  She asked me what I ate and suggested changing my diet.  I thought, "Really?"  Well, I eventually did it and felt WAY better.  In a nutshell, I wasn't eating anything crazy but I was eating too much white flour and sugar so basically, I was constantly crashing.  It was that simple!  When I added exercise, I was not only cured but felt better and had more energy than I have in my entire life.  I still can't believe it was just because of food.

  • Thanks for all of the advice ladies.  When my thyroid and other blood work was run, I wasn't given any results about the levels in writing, just told that everything was fine.  She did also run a quick screen allergy on the blood work, but I think that was more environmental than food related.  I also saw a GI Dr. about a year and a half ago because of abdominal pain and inflammation came up on a MRI.  They thought that I may have had ulcerative colitis or somthing, although I have never had a problem with my stools.  I had a colonoscopy and everything was clear.  Then, followed through wtih my OBGYN and had a sonohystogram to check for cysts etc, since I have super heavy periods with horrible cramping.  Everything came back negative there too.  Then, the abdominal pain went away and hasn't been back since.

I guess my first step will be asking for a referral to the allergist.  I tried the ani-depressant (Celexa) for a while, but it just made me feel emotionless, like I couldn't have any feelings and felt like I had to "fake" lauging etc.  I did test low for Vitamin D and have been taking a supplement for that.  I think that I will also ask for a referral to see a psychologist/psychiatrist.

  • I'm late to reply, but I had the same thing after DD1. I never got an answer, but I do know that the hormonal changes with pregnancy (and after) can cause you to become more sensitive to foods that you weren't before PG.

I tried meds, but honestly the only thing that helped me with mood, sleep and energy was to force myself to start working out and getting some sunlight. I didn't usually want to work out, but I always felt better after a good run or a gym session. I still have stomach issues and have no idea what's causing them, so I can't help you there.

    Hope you feel better soon!

I'm sorry.  I missed your post before and the Nest has been messed up with the "Threads I'm Watching" page so I'm way late to this.

I'm allergic to soy, walnuts, pecans, and brazil nuts.  I'm also intolerant to onions.  The biggest offender is soy.  It's in almost everything and was what was making me the most ill and hard to pinpoint because everything is improperly labeled and cross-contaminated.  If I catch the slightest trace of soy I get really sick to my stomach and have cystic acne that pops up later that day.

Mine were completely adult onset allergies.  I had never had an issue with food before until last year.  The more I read about this, the more I learn how common it is becoming in both adults and children, and they think it's because of certain ingredients in our food.  It's pretty frightening.
