Why don't people believe me when....

Why don't people believe me when I tell them I work part time and earn a full time income?

Why do so many people feel that my line of work with direct sales isn't a serious job or career.  It makes me sad to think that my profession can't be taken serious.  Why would I want to work for someone else?  I like being my own boss.  I like determining if I am going to give myself a raise.  I like being able to be there to help change other peoples lives.

What's your opinion?

  • I'm not sure what you're really looking for in this post. If you're happy with your job, that's great.  If someone else has a problem with it, that is his or her problem.  Just as you enjoy being your own boss, others enjoy working in a more conventional environment, and there is nothing wrong with that either. Live and let live.

Agree with PP. Yes  Stop caring what others think.  Some people are just envious.

  • I too don't know what you are looking for by posting this, but maybe these people you encounter are jealous.
  • Since you only have 3 posts, I'm guessing that you are waiting for someone to ask you what direct sales line you work with so you can direct them to your referral link...

  • Reported.

All this post is missing is a direct link to her direct sales business and an invite to her "party".

    Uggh.

  • Man, she almost got me to ask what she does too...

  • I am confused.  The page said you can vent about your job here.... After reading several post, I though it was fitting...sorry I offended you all. not meant to at all.  Thank you for your time

  • wtf is a full time wage on a part time job? Do you just mean you make what some others make full time by working less hours? Because if so, most people can claim that. Someone always makes less while working more.
  • Who is criticizing you for not working enough hours? The only time I've heard that said is when its obvious someone doesn't want to work but wants to pretend to their family that they are working. Like they live with their parents and tell people they are an actor. Someone was just telling me that their sister is basically a trophy housewife but tells people she's in real estate even though she has never sold a house.

    My thoughts exactly.

I'm glad you're your own boss. I'm not interested in multilevel marketing, thanks.

    1) People feel that direct sales isn't a serious job or career because you sucker/guilt/brainwash your friends, family, neighbors, strangers in the grocery store, etc. to buy whatever product you are selling and/or you sign them up to work under you so you get a cut of their sales.  It also isn't a serious job b/c you're brainwashed into thinking you work for yourself when in reality you work for a huge company.

    2) You are working for someone else- whatever company you are hocking crap for.

    3) Direct sales does not change people's lives. Unless you sucker someone into working underneath you in the pyramid. In which case, it isn't changing them for the better!

  • Here's the thing. I "work" in direct sales on the side of my full-time job because:

    A. I needed slightly more income than I make at work to help pay off DH's debt from before marriage so we can get a house and reproduce before we're 40;

    B. I have an understanding of how much more than me the people above me in the pyramid make, but given that I make $26k at my job and the CEO made over $4million last year, I felt like I'd already accepted this about jobs and wages; and

    C. Every part time job I interviewed for had a problem with my lack of availability on weekends, which is when I work.

Having said that, I am not completely my own boss, I have to meet (albeit very low) quarterly sales quotas, I'm encouraged to recruit below me to make more money (and I don't because frankly I don't care to teach anyone what to do or be responsible for helping them), and I can't give myself a raise except through recruiting. I can sell more on my own, but that's not a raise because the percentage I earn stays the same. LYING ABOUT THE BUSINESS IS NOT GOING TO HELP YOU RECRUIT. And for goodness sake, pester your friends, not us.
