@ Breakfast ideas please...

N is 1 now and I still have no good ideas on what to give her for breakfast.  It is mainly at the weekends that we need this for.

She will eat toast/bread.  Sometimes weetabix with a little milk.  Sometimes some dry cornflakes.  Will eat fruit.  Is not really liking eggs.

Need ideas that are quick and simple...

Thanks

  • We usually do yoghurt and fruit, seperately. Sometimes eggs and he'll eat our pancakes. We'll be trying oatmeal once the weather becomes colder.

  • Fresh or frozen fruit chunks in yogurt. If frozen, you have more variety depending on what's growing where you are, things like mangoes and peaches. Just leave out on the counter for a little while to defrost before breakfast. However, if your child is teething, she might love the fruit frozen as is.

Toast spread with cheese- cream cheese, fromage frais, etc.

    Tortillas with veggie puree inside.

If the weather is cold (not sure where you are), I like to mix up a pot of amaranth and quinoa at the beginning of the week and then reheat it as the week goes on. Combine 2/3 cup quinoa and 1/3 cup amaranth with 2 cups cold water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until water is absorbed. Serve salty with a drizzle of olive oil & grated parmesan cheese or serve sweet with some cinnamon, milk & fruit.

  • I often give DS some dry Cheerios and raisins to keep him occupied while I make breakfast. He loves breakfast, it's his biggest meal of the day and he usually has a carbohydrate (weetabix/toast/porridge, and fruit and a yogurt!)

With toast I try to mix it up a bit so he gets used to different flavours; so toast with either: cream cheese, butter and marmite, mashed banana and honey, peanut butter, etc.

He loves porridge and now finally at 15 months is getting better with a spoon, but when he only wanted to feed himself with his fingers I used to overcook the porridge/ make up with less milk- so it solidified a bit and then I could put chunks of it on his tray.  Also when he only wanted finger food I bought the 'mini-weetabix' and they would stay pretty hard in milk so I could soak them for a few mins in milk and then put them out on his tray.

He also is a big fan of fruit loaf (that's his Irish roots coming through!)

  • Thanks for the ideas.  Never thought of the mini weetabix! Or even yoghurt for breakfast (which she loves but often gets as a dessert).

Unfortunately for her she is not going to be getting porridge or oatmeal from me!!! The sight and smell of it make me want to throw up... can't be in the same room as it without my stomach turning... I know it's good for her but maybe the childminder can give her some during the week...
