What is so bad about egg yolks?

Hello ladies,

I'm not trying to start drama, I promise:)  But I see a lot of posts about people recommending/or eating only the egg whites.  I thought the yolk was the most nutritious part, with all the vitamins and minerals and whatnot.  Also I thought the cholesterol risk was found to be minor in recent research?

Correct me if I'm wrong?  I get that there's a lot of fat in them, but I am trying to eat 40/30/30 carbs/pro/fat and eggs help me get the protein & fat requirements..

I've never eaten just an eggwhite - seems like a waste to throw out the yolks.  FWIW I eat 4-7 eggs a week.  DS who is almost 3 eats about 3 or 4 a week.  Is there some research I'm missing and need to know about?

Thanks:))

  • Nothing. Egg yolks are good for you.

Agreed.  But I sometimes use a mix of whole eggs and egg whites to save calories.  Like yesterday I made scrambled eggs for DH and I that had 3 whole eggs and two eggs whites.

And as a weight watchers, egg whites are a points "bargain" at 1 point for THREE egg whites, 2 points for one whole egg.

  • It's more about the calories than the cholesterol.  Egg yolks have about 75% of the total calories of a whole egg.

  • I used to not like the taste of eggs (period), but then I realized what a great food source it was and the white of them was most palatable (since it is very bland).  I've only recently (like within the last 6 months) started to eat the yolk, and really enjoy the flavor combo.  It was "weird" for me at first, but now it's great!

To answer your question, I think (and maybe its only a small %, like me) who just get weirded out by the texture of the yolk and can't get over it.  I also agree on the calories--I'll often make an omelet is one full egg and one white.

  • I think it's everything in moderation. I eat a lot of egg whites because I like them. When I'm having hard boiled eggs, I don't like the yolk, but if I'm doing something like fried eggs, I totally eat the yolk. When I make a breakfast sandwich, it all just depends on my mood if I just do whites or the yolks as well.

I'm probably no help at all :)

  • IMHO, there's nothing bad about egg yolks!  I love them, and agree with you that that's where most of the goodness is.  Yes, they contain the bulk of the calories, but there's just so much awesome to make up for it.

Plain egg whites are just boring to me.

This is me.  I grew up hating eggs.  As an adult I discovered it was just the egg yolk I disliked and a whole new world opened up to me.  Egg white breakfast burritos, egg white omelets, scrambled egg whites, yum!  I don't think there is anything wrong with the yolk.  If I liked it I'd eat it too.
