Tornadoes

I was just hoping that everyone in is doing ok after all the tornadoes lately.

DD, how did you manage? I have family down in Huntsville, so I've been kind of worried about the weather down there.

We just got a lot of rain here.

Re: Tornadoes

  • Sorry I'm just now replying. Still no internet service at home.

We are fine. We missed the tornado by a hair this time, so no damage at our house. My parents got it instead. They got really, really lucky though. They have a lot of tree and yard damage and pretty much every window is broken, but the houses around them have major structural damage. The area where I teach was hit the hardest. We have lots of kids at school who now have damaged or destroyed homes. I've only heard of 1 death reported in Alabama though, so we're all just counting our blessings.

  • DD- i was thinking about you. We missed it by about 4 miles. We have debris and trash everywhere, limbs down (Great move for cutting down old trees in the fall) and a ton of yard work to do. My parents have usual damage. Missed them by about 7-8 miles. One horse damaged his leg when we were running them into their barns, but we made out okay. Some of our friends - not so lucky. We had quite a few towns completely demolished in KY, IN, and Ohio. I went home early, grabbed Charlotte from the babysitter and let the babysitter go home early. She was home within minutes of the storm and it missed her by a few miles. We had three separate huge tornadoes pretty much hit all areas of our city. And then today.. SNOW. We have about 3 inches but they didnt treat the roads and traffic is a nightmare.

I knew KY, IN, OH got it worse than we did. Sorry to hear about your damage, but glad everyone is ok. It came less than 1/2 mile from our house again. It was just a weaker storm, so we didn't get damage this time, just debris. Some of the houses just north of us that were just rebuit are damaged or destroyed again. So sad. :-( We were in the hallways at school, when one passed a mile north and one 1.5 miles south. Usually, people would be mad that we hadn't dismissed yet, but in this case, we're thankful our students weren't home.

  • Oh and there was a hurt horse in my parents' subdivision. :-( And the remains of a bird are on their front glass door. I cried a couple of times this weekend, but when I saw those feathers on the glass I almost broke down. I can't stand the thought of all of the animals outside. :-(
  • I've heard several times now that this is supposed to be a bad summer for tornadoes in my area.  I'm really hoping that's an exaggeration.  Nebraska's been spared for the most part for the last few years, so I almost forget how scary bad weather can be.  I feel so terrible for everyone (including you, DD) who has had to go through this all over again after last year.  Even if you didn't sustain damage, severe weather is so nerve-wracking.

I can't imagine it snowing on top of all the damage either.  I wish people could be spared such bad luck.  Bad weather just isn't fair -- no one deserves to have to put up with it.
