So, I mentioned that I have a blind neighbor. He carries one of those white sticks (what are they called?), and I've seen his partner help him in and out of the building.
He also has a dog. It's not a seeing eye dog, just a regular dog. You might recall that this, in part, spurred my questions about how blind people pick up their dog's poop.
I have an update. I just spied on my neighbor while he was walking his dog. I watched his dog poop. Then the BLIND neighbor reached down and picked it up. He also didn't have his white stick with him. It seemed, from my vantage point in the window, that he could see the poop.
Now I have another problem. Is my neighbor lying about being blind? Why would he fake it? Can you get those white sticks if you're just a little blind?

You can be declared legally blind (and have cane privileges) but still retain some vision. For instance, my friend's dad only had peripheral vision, so he couldn't drive, but damn if he could tell if she was trying to sneak his car keys from the kitchen.
Or maybe your neighbor is a faker like that ho Helen Keller.

I was wondering if anyone would catch on to that! Of course I can't fool my Smockster. I do have a funny story though. I think it's funny.
When a friend of mine was young (but not that young), she asked her brother why the road was always torn up around the stop signs. He told her it was so the blind people knew where to stop. She totally bought it until he could no longer hold in his laughter. We've all made fun of her for it ever since.
No, but their drivers are allowed to have the handicapped tags.
I know too much about blind people. At least my candy striping wasn't all for naught.
FWIW, they can still have the tags for when their friends/family have to drive them.

Did I ever tell TIP that as a child I was convinced that I would someday go blind? This was not based on any medical problems, but rather on a 1950s book about a boy who plays with firecrackers and loses his sight.
I read the book around 3rd grade and decided that I needed to teach myself braille ASAP. Needless to say, my efforts at braille were futile (it's really difficult!) which caused me a great deal of youthful anxiety.
Totally possible to be legally blind with a cane but not fully blind. I have a blind friend who walks with a cane but has some sight.
He's had like 10 corneal transplants over the course of his life to regain some vision in one eye. He can see shapes and colors a bit but he's pretty blind. I worry a lot though because he loves to cook and slices garlic with a razor blade by touch. Hmmm

Which was to ask how the blind people knew when to go again if they couldn't see the other cars.
