What should be done with a spay?

The vet assistant at the vet's office was telling us about a few other places and what they do. Do all places give iv fluids and pain meds? Our place also said they keep them overnight and that is a charge for boarding. I want to do what needs done but am trying to balance it with cost as well. I can't imagine having surgery without pain meds, etc.

Each vet has a different policy - some give meds, some dont. Some require an over night stay - again, some dont.
I'd call around to a few other places and see what their policies and prices are, there might be places with lower prices who don't give pain meds but would if you asked (for a fee, of course) and their services are just as good.
I don't recall any of our pets having pain meds we had to give them after we brought them home. They did receive something at the vet for pain, but nothing for at home.

As PP have mentioned, it varies and you should check around. Did you have an earlier post about this and get information about spay/nueter assistance in your local area? Some cities offer vouchers to assist with the cost and some vets have spay days with discounted prices, which could really help with the cost, since you're doing two at once.
I can't remember whether we brought home any pain meds or not, but we did choose to do the IV fluids. While I have no other experience to compare it to, I'm glad did it, since she seemed to recover very quickly. We also did same day pick up. I dropped her off around 8 AM and picked her up around 5PM.
All vets are different. Not all do IV fluids. Many will offer pain meds to take home, but some will require it. Not all require an overnight stay.
I had a foster who had to stay overnight at the vet for her spay. I asked on this board about it, and the consensus seemed to be that if the vet were staffed overnight, to leave her, but if not, she'd be better off at home with me that night. It's up to you what makes you feel comfortable. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
If I were you, I'd bring the cat home that night, with pain meds, and opt for IV fluids. Those would be my preferences.

Our dog is actually at the vet getting neutered today. They charge 99 bucks including pain meds, but IV fluids are extra. I opted for them, DH probably will think it's dumb, but fluids are needed for surgery. I'm also getting him microchipped while he's under since it's a big needle and he's less then 20 lbs.
Yes I did ask about programs but not what is done during the surgery itself and what should be done. I called around and we don't qualify for any assistance as we are not on any public assistance. From my digging around the low cost programs are through the state in NJ and they will only provide them if we are on food stamps, medicare, etc. We aren't. My husband works and I stay at home with our kids, 3 of them have special needs. I found a program that will do a discounted voucher for the operation and anesthesia. It will cost 65 dollars per kitty for that and we pay for any additional charges.
That's my point as well. I wouldn't have major surgery for myself and NOT have pain meds. IMO, it's cruel to expect that my babies will do the same.
I Opt for pain meds just in case. I don't recall if my pets got IVs. I've picked up my dogs the day of surgery. I also ask for pre-op bloodwork just to m ake sure they're ok for surgery.
