So many machines....

So I recently joined a gym after gaining 10 pounds since my wedding in October. Prior to that I always worked out at home w/dvds or walked outside.

Now that I joined the gym, there are a lot of different cardio machines. What would be the best machine for cardio. I tend to stick to the plain ol' treadmill since I can walk and/or run. What about all the other fancy machines? Are they better than the treadmill or just all the same?

Re: So many machines....

  • I don't think any of them are "better" than any other.  All cardio is good for you.

For me it's just a matter of which ones I like doing.  I love the step mill (looks like a little escalator), the rowing machine, and my gym just got this lateral machine that's like an elliptical, but your feet circle out to the sides, not forward and backward, so it really works your inner and outer thighs.  It's killer!  I hate the dreadmill but will use it if necessary.

I get bored easily so sometimes I'll do 10 minutes on one machine, switch to another for 10-15 mins, etc.

If I were you I would try them all and see which ones you like best.  You're more likely to stick with your workout if you enjoy what you're doing.

  • Thanks. Thats what I kind of figured.

  • Many gyms offer a complementary personal training sessions. I would take advantage of it and ask about how the different type of machine. I have also found great cardio workouts for the treadmill, bike, etc on fitness magazine's website among others.

  • You could also try group fitness classes like zumba, step, aerobics, or indoor cycling if you think you will get bored on a machine.
