Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to plan a trip to Nashville in April. Never been before, but heard it is a blast. Can someone give a suggestion as to what area of town to stay in? I've heard downtown near broadway, but if anyone can suggest a few hotels I would appreciate it. Prefer less than $200/night. Also, can we get away without a rental car? What sights are a must see.
Re: Nashville
Love love LOVE Nashville!! We have stayed downtown near Broadway, it's walking distance to all the bars/restraurants, etc. We stayed at the Doubletree. We've also stayed in West End, at the Loews and Hotel Indigo. Those are about a 5-7 miinute cab ride to downtown. There's also a Hotel Indigo downtown. They should be in your price range.
If you are going to the Grand Ol Opry and Opryland Hotel (which is really awesome, we spent a couple hours walking around), you should get a car unless you do a Grayline tour or something. They are a ways away from downtown.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Ryman are downtown. The Bridgestone Arena is also right downtown. Check out Tootsies and Legends, they are live music places that have been around for ages- right on the corner of Broadway and 5th (I think it's 5th, they are caddy corner to the Bridgestone)
Definitely go to Tootsies!
We ate at Big River Grille on Broadway and it was awesome.
We've stayed at the Holiday Inn, Doubletree and Hotel Indigo downtown and all were good.
I love Nashville!

It's definitely a fun town. It was 8 years ago when we stayed in a hotel (after that I stayed with a friend in Bellevue), but I believe it was the Best Western & convention center where we stayed. It was right in front of the Country Music Hall of Fame & very convenient to walk everywhere!
You must take a General Jackson sightseeing cruise. It was cool and we got dinner and a show on board. It docks right by the Opryland Hotel. http://www.generaljackson.com/
I miss Nashville! I lived there for a few years but moved home for DH and family 3 years ago.
Stay downtown to be near the Honky Tonk action. A car isn't an absolute must, but will open up so many more options and neighborhoods to you. Downtown is mostly just the strip of stuff on Broadway. With a car, you can drive over to the 12th Ave South neighborhood near Belmont, Hillsboro Village near Vanderbilt, and The Gulch - each are Nashville neighborhoods less than 10 minutes from downtown with their own sets of trendy restaurants and bars. You could also easily drive to the Opryland hotel which is its own place to see.
The neighborhood descriptions on this website are pretty accurate:
