What is on the agenda for today? Isnt it SuperTuesday back in the States?
QOTD: Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?
Re: Good Morning!
I have a friend and her baby coming over in a bit for coffee. I just got done doing most of the desperately needed house cleaning so that her baby can move about on the floor.
What is Super Tuesday?
QOTD: not really. In Dallas, they have a St Patricks day parade and lots of green beer. I went once to that,, but that's all
Today was pretty boring. I woke up with a head-exploding headache so I laid on the couch pretty much all day, though I did make a homemade skillet pizza for dinner.
Tomorrow it's grocery shopping day, and I have to figure out something to do with the pumpkin from my in-laws garden. I am thinking of baking it and serving it as a pumpkin mash with the mushroom pilaf I have planned for dinner, but I am not too sure about that, I have really only ever made soup and risotto with pumpkin (winter squash).
QOTD: In NOLA I would go to the St. Patrick's Day parade and catch all the fixings for a corned beef and cabbage, but the corned beef -- yes the float riders would hurl vegetables at the spectators, Brussels Sprouts were okay, but cabbages hurt when they hit you. But that was as far as I went after I got out of school and the threat of schoolyard pinching for not wearing green was over. As an adult, I tended to do St. Joseph's Day (March 19) a bit more, the altars were fantastic works of art and I liked the non-commerical aspect of the feast day more, besides, anise and seed cookies beat boiled cabbage anyday!
Hello! Today I am babysitting a friends baby for a couple hours. Its nice because I get paid a little and she gets cheap childcare while she works part-time. Plus then Georgia has a little friend to play with.
What is super tuesday? I feel like I should know.... but I don't....
QOTD: Not really. Maybe I'll wear green, but that's about the extent of my celebrations!
Good morning! I slept funny and am in a lot of pain this morning :-( Am hoping it stretches out soon, I'm planning to go to the gym this evening. I took a couple tylenol's but that's doing nothing at all!
QODT: No, except once by mistake. We were flying back to Edinburgh that night and went out in Philly with some friends. Will never, ever drink before a flight again, it was miserable!

I'm at work so nothing exciting on the agenda for today (although I am going back on maternity leave in June therefore I am not going to start on any new projects here at work as they are pretty long-term- so I just have complete the existing ones I am working on by June...so it's going to be a pretty easy 4 months!)
The were talking about Super Tuesday on the Radio here this morning basically concluded the Republican candidates are a bunch of nut-jobs.
We are probably going to have people over for Paddy's Day as there is a England vs Ireland rugby match which my DH will want to watch. We definitely celebrated Paddy's Day much more in Chicago then my DH ever did in Dublin- to him it's just a day off work (it's a public holiday in Ireland). And almost no in Ireland eats Corn Beef and Cabbage- who knew?!
Morning! As a poli sci MA and hopefully eventually PhD, I feel semi-qualified to answer the Super Tuesday question :-)
Short answer: Super Tuesday is when a large number of US states have their primaries, so a tendency towards the winner of the party nomination for their presidential candidate can usually be seen.
Backstory: The Republican party chooses its official candidate for Pres and VP at the Republican National Convention. The votes are cast by delegates from each state and some "superdelegates," who are people of prominence is some area (film, sports, etc). The state delegates vote for the candidate who won the primary in their state (although some states go with proportional distribution, so if Romney got 75% of the vote and Gingrich got 25% then 3/4 of the state's delegates would vote for Romney at the RNC and 1/4 for Gingrich). That's why, after Super Tuesday, you can usually tally up the votes each candidate will get at the convention and see who will probably win the nomination.
QOTD: I usually wear something green, but that's the extent of it. If it's on a Mon/Tues/Wed, which is around when my English class is, then I sometimes will have that evening's conversation be on St. Patrick's day.
Hola! Not too much going on today. It's a pretty busy day at work, and then tonight I'm going over to a friend's house to celebrate her birthday!
QOTD: Yep! DH is Irish/Scottish in heritage, so it's his favorite holiday. We've stocked up on Guinness, and we'll be making our usual Guinness stew, brown bread, & Guinness cupcakes to enjoy while watching Darby O'Gill and the Little People (which features a very young Sean Connery)!

My Doha Adventures
Hello all. Things have been pretty busy at work recently, so I don't really have as much time to be on here
. Nothing much going on today, just trying to go to the gym this evening. DH is still out of town, and I can't wait for him to come home on Friday!
QOTD: Not really. I have in the past when it's on the weekend, but not in recent years.
Cecilia arrived 12 October 2012
I'm bummed I had to cancel my intensive week of Alliance Francaise writing classes because my physical for my residency card was scheduled and can't be changed. It has put me in a crappy mood all day since we're having visitors for the next 8 weeks and I don't know when I will have time again to do the classes 9which I already paid for). Grrrrrrr.
My brother's b-day is on SPD, so in that sense, yes, I celebrate it. We've taken trips together for his birthday. This year, however, I'll be traveling with my parents to Madrid to see family that weekend.
Not too much happening today. Have some laundry to do and desperately need to go food shopping. I'm also working on trying to get DD to nap in her crib so I'm diligently watching her for cues that she is tired. She's so freakin cute and smiley though I just want to keep playing with her.
QOTD: I will probably make Guinness stew and wear some green. Back in the states I loved going to the parades.
Good morning!
Today I have some studying to do, then later in the afternoon I'm meeting up with my BFF for a quick shopping spree before we go to a mutual friend's dinner party.
QOTD: We don't. It's not celebrated in Italy so I'd never even heard of it before we relocated.
Afternoon...
I've been in training all morning, hour and a half for lunch and catch up and then another meeting... Home in the next hour or so I hope.
QOTD... contentious answer coming here quite possibly... No, I don't really celebrate Paddy's Day! As someone said already, its a day off work (this year the 19th). When I lived in the city centre the parade was a PITA because of where I lived - I couldn't cross the city easily and was stuck at home really. When I was a kid we used to go to the city to watch the parade but I couldn't be bothered any more - too many people! Some even bring step ladders to get a view.
And someone else said we don't eat corned beef and cabbage... I've never had corned beef in my life!! But bacon and cabbage is a different story... though a lot of people don't like it.
Paddy's day can be a bit of a problem in Dublin later in the day as a lot of people see it as an occasion to drink (and why not) but they start too early in the day (like as soon as the off licence opens) and continue on all day/night and the level of anti-social behaviour, crime, accidents, etc get way out of control. There was talk a couple of years ago that alcohol shouldn't be sold before 3 in the afternoon, but I can't remember what was decided on...
But on the news that evening, there will be various reports from around the country where they show all the parades, even from the smallest places ever and it is funny to watch... This from wikipedia:
"The shortest St Patrick's Day parade in the world takes place in Dripsey, Cork. The parade lasts just 100 yards and travels between the village's two pubs.[25]"
