LIP: How the heck do you get toned arms like these?

I was cruising through Athleta's website and was just in awe of these model's arms. Likewhoa.

How/what exercises can I do to get arms like these?

Re: LIP: How the heck do you get toned arms like these?

  • You get arms like that through strength training, a good diet, cardio and maybe most importantly, good genes!

Not very helpful, I know, but it's the truth :)

what strength training exercises would you recommend?

Well, bicep, tricep and shoulder work is necessary.  Bicep curls, tricep kick backs, rows, shoulder presses, push ups, etc.  Maybe google arm workouts for some more ideas or some pics if you don't know what some of the exercises look like.

  • well, she is a fitness model.  her routine is probably broken into 2 phases: a building phase and a cutting phase. she has a lot of muscle, to get that muscle, you have to lift heavy weights and eat a lot (calories build muscle). then you have a cutting phase, which is when you diet to get rid of the fat that is on top of the muscle that you build.  that leaves you with a very shapely, strong body (aka "toned").

CrossFit (and good genes) made my arms look like this.  So that's lot of bodyweight exercises, throwing wall balls, and heavy (olympic) weight lifting.

  • Mine are *starting* to look like this, but with tons of extra skin from my weight loss. I do it all...intense cardio, stregnth training (I lift both heavy, and do BodyPump sometimes), push ups and assisted pull-ups, yoga....and I drink protein shakes a couple of times a week.

  • I got very toned arms from p90x
  • I'm looking more for toned arms (not necessarily big/bulky)... is heavier lifting still the best way to go? or less weights and more reps?

You are a woman, you will not get big/bulky.

I have taught Bodypump for years (light weights/high reps) and I don't really consider it strength training, more a "strength endurance" class.  My definition didn't really come out until I started lifting heavy.

  • My arms are close to this, and I run and spin for cardio, and I have religiously done Jillian's No More Trouble Zones for about a year now.  I started her workout with 5 pound weights and am now up to 10's.  Sometimes I will switch it up with Jackie Warner, or someone else, but I feel like Jillian focuses much more on the upper body than most of the DVD's that I have.
  • My yoga instructor's arms look like this.
  • My arms kinda look like that. I do bicep curls, tricep presses, upright rows (3 sets of about 20), pushups, planks, and yoga. For me, I think it's a combo of all of those exercises.

    THIS.

That model has a very low body fat % in that photo. You can do all the bicep curls in the world, but if your body fat % is too high, you aren't going to see anything.

    Another for THIS.

Also, a lot of her definition is in her shoulders and not just her arms, which is why she has the "capped" look at the top. Shoulder presses, YWVTUs, lateral/front raises will all help with that.

  • I think I have fabulous arms and I got them from a history of gymnastics (built my shoulders and they never left even though I quit in 5th grade), bodypump, and a good diet.  Most of my "weight training" is bodypump.

Meh, I don't really think that's the case here. It's an ad for athletic clothing. I very much believe those models really do work their butts off to maintain that shape for shoots. I know the women in Oxygen mag really do look like that when they go to their shoots, and of course the women who compete (Fitness/Figure) have actually put in the work in the kitchen/gym to get arms even better than the picture the OP linked.

I understand that a lot of times pictures are overly photoshopped, but because this picture is of a strong, hard-working woman's arms, I'm just not quick to assume it's shopped. It's promoting strength and the beauty that comes with that. This look IS attainable. It's not easy, but it's very possible.
