It's a small world after all
I was sitting in my French class this morning when a substitute teacher walked in. She looked really familiar but I couldn't quite place her. Two minutes and thirty seconds later as she was correcting my pronunciation on something it clicked.
She used to teach at my old French school in Geneva. I've had her as a substitute before. I remember her because she's one of the few people who makes a point of correcting pronunciation, which I really appreciate.
How crazy is that? Have you ever randomly run into someone you know in another country?

That's pretty cool!
I used to be a travel agent years ago. Our office had a fun atmosphere and some of our customers would hang out in the office a lot, or join us afterwork when we went out. Anyway, I saw one of those guys in Amsterdam either last year or the year before. He was eating at a cafe.
That is pretty random!
I've had a couple of them.
First time was in NYC - walking down Broadway with my friend and we bump into a couple of girls who we knew from college. We are all Irish, living in Ireland but all on a student summer visa in the US that summer but happened to be all in NYC on that same day... none of us had spent the summer there (we had been in Newport, RI for the summer)
Second time was also someone from college but years later. When I was working in Luxembourg I walked into one of the Irish bars (The Black Stuff) and there was someone reading a newspaper - he takes down the paper and it turns out it was a guy I knew well in college but had lost contact with. He was working in finance, I was working in hotels...

That's surreal!
We ran into someone randomly when we were on holiday in London but that's pretty much it - most of the people we know from back home don't travel at all.

Last year, I ran into one of my old students (from Colombia) who I'd taught in Australia in London. In a cemetery (Highgate) no less!
It was really strange! We just kind of looked at each other in disbelief and said OMG a few times. Unfortunately, I couldn't talk long as I was on a walking tour and I wanted to keep up. I knew he was was studying in London, but I really didn't think I'd run into him.
It can be such a small world sometimes!
Just last month, at our local gym, we ran into a guy that DH had done a semester abroad with in Spain. He was just in London for business.
On our honeymoon, there were two other couples at our lodge and on our same jeep that were on their honeymoon after a wedding in NYC (same as us). One of the couples had gotten married at the same location as us, just the week before. Then I realized that I had actually emailed with this bride months before, sharing tips and recommendations on our venue!
Cecilia arrived 12 October 2012
I was walking up to the Acropolis in Athens and heard my name. It was a girl from high school. That was strange.
I also ran into two people I know in Jerusalem and one in Tel Aviv they were on the Birthright trips so it wasn't so strange to see them.
I was traveling around Europe when I was 19 for a month, and was walking in Florence with my friends, looked up, and my parents were in front of me. I knew they were going to be in Italy, but had no idea when or where, and was shocked. We ended up having the best meal of our trip that night!
My mom and I were sitting in a restaurant in Melbourne and the couple next to us that sat down was a business acquaintance of my dads in Chicago that my mom knew.
I have run into people in airports in Frankfurt and London too. I have a weird thing where I run into people everywhere I go.
When I was in Beijing, I was randomly telling a friend about an Irish guy I had dated briefly in Paris 7 years earlier. A week later I bumped into him at a club. I kept assuming that I was just making it up, since he had come to mind recently, but it was him, and he'd just moved to Beijing!
Mostly a lurker here, but I have a fun one. About 10 years ago I went to this indoor skydiving place in Tennessee. My friend and I were the last two to get in for that session so the people behind us decided to leave. I remember feeling badly for them because we overheard that they were Danish and thought maybe they had come from a long distance.
Fast forward 2-3 years and I'm on a flight from Brussels to ?? ( can't remember with U.S city I was flying in to) and I ended up in a conversation with a guy next to me. Found out he was Danish and living in Kentucky. I said, "I bet there aren't many Danes in Kentucky" and then it hit me! I asked him and yes, he was in line behind us the few years prior at the skydiving place in Tennessee!
