Best way to get from BCN to Plaza Catalunya?

We'll be arriving mid afternoon on a Friday.  I am so confused with the airport's website and RENFE.

What mode of transportation (pre-paid taxi, taxi, Aerobus?, or train (RENFE?) do you recommend? Or something else?  (FYI, we arrive into Terminal 1)

TIA

Re: Best way to get from BCN to Plaza Catalunya?

  • Getting there we took Renfe (it might be a little confusing on the website, but it's really easy to use).

Going back to the airport, we caught one of the buses at Placa Catalunya. I *think* you waited near the El Corte Ingles. Either way, there was an obvious waiting section. It was super easy and stress-free.

  • We took a cab from the airport to our hotel. It was about 25-30 Euro. For us, it was worth not having to deal with figuring out public transportation, carrying all of your stuff, etc. Plus, we were exhausted when we arrived (we left from work on Friday and didn't sleep on the plane because it was full of 90 high school kids who were going to Spain for a school trip . . . they didn't sleep and kept the entire plane up.) We also took a cab back to the airport because we had to leave the hotel by 7am (our flight was at 10.)

  • Thanks. So it's something that we can pretty much wait until we're ready to leave the airport to decide and then it's fairly easy/obvious? It looks like for the bus you can pay on the bus itself; is that similar for RENFE or do you buy a ticket in advance?

We'd like to save some money and avoid using taxis; hopefully toting our luggage on a train or bus won't be an issue! We've done it on here (Chicago) with out public transit. (eta: both of our flights (in/to) are midday, so we're not overly concerneds about arriving/eaving too late or early)

Sorry, all these little questions! Just trying to cover bases

  • there is a bus to the RENFE station (free shuttle) then took that the train the metro near our hotel. the most annoying thing was transferring to the metro. you can buy your tickets at the RENFE station. on our way home, we took a cab because we were leaving so early in the morning.

  • We took a taxi from the airport because we landed after 11 pm (we flew from Granada to BCN) and just wanted to get to the airport we rented. However on the way back to the airport, we used the bus and it was super easy. If we had arrived earlier in the day to BCN, we would have gone that route. It was no problem to use with luggage (we each had a backpack). Also we used the metro to get to Placa Catalunya from the apartment we rented and again had no problems with our bags.
  • Thanks NDSU; I was on their website earlier and getting frustrated with it!

I kind of this this Aerobus looks good and it'd only be 9.15EU roundtrip!

     Thanks osu!

  • bus rides tend to make me pukey (even with meds) so we opted not to do that but it looked like an affordable, reliable option

  • We took the Aerobus, it was very easy to find and use. We didn't have to wait long either as there were buses coming and going, we paid got on and were on our wat to plaza catalunya.
  • OP, the bus was very easy to find, clean, and like PP mention, came pretty frequently.  Also, the had tons of racks to put down your luggage.

We didn't figure things until we got there so don't stress yourself out too much :) There will be plenty of people at the airport who can help you if you have questions.  Honestly, I think Barcelona's public transportation system to/from the airport is a little easier compared to other cities.

Ha, I'm sure I am. Thanks!
  • Another vote for the Aerobus. I've taken this on something like 3 or 4 separate trips and it's really quick, efficient and generally nice. It takes you to Placa Catalunya, although there are sometimes stops en route (i.e. Placa Espanya) so do confirm when you are leaving that it's the right place.
  • The Aerobus is great.  We followed the signs for ground transportation and bought 2 round-trip tix at the line for the bus.  The only slightly tricky thing is that you need to look at the BCN website and figure out which terminal your departing flight leaves from (assuming you're leave Barcelona via the airport and not a train, etc) so you get on the correct bus for your return trip.

Good point, we are flying out a different airline than we're flying in. Thanks!
  • Another vote for Aerobus! Very easy to find and buy tickets, inexpensive, and fast.

On the way back, we already felt confident/familiar enough with the metro to take the train to the airport. Transferred from the metro L4 at Passeig de Gracia to R2 train - doable with carry-ons, but pretty hot and heavy. GL!
