Question ~ Trash Removal

Hi All,

Long time lurker, posted maybe a couple of times. Here is the deal, I am not 100% sure this is where I should post this but...

I received a flyer in the mail yesterday for a trash removal company that is starting to offer services in my area. They quoted me a price of $12 a month ($36 every three months) which includes the 96 gallon garbage can with wheels. Sounds too good to be true! My current service is charging me $55 every three months which includes a fee for the garbage can I have. Obviously, price wise its a no brainer on what I should do. However, my issue is I am unable to find any reviews on this company and the last thing I want to do is switch only to switch back because of service disappointment. I assume the reason I have not been able to find reviews online is because the company is fairly new to the area, however there are several branches of the company throughout a couple different states, so not entirely new!

My question is has anyone used BestWay Disposal Waste and Recycling Services or know someone who has? If so, what kind of review would you give them as a company? I don't need advise on switching based on price, because again the price is nice. But I have always had the mindset that you get what you pay for, and if you aren't paying a lot chances are you might not be getting a lot.

Any input you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Also, if this isn't the right place for this question if you can suggest a better place for it, I would appreciate that also.

 Thanks again!

  • I've never used them, but I was thinking that you should see how long that $12/month price is locked in for.  Since they're new to the area I would just want to make sure that it's not some sort of a promo rate that will go up in a couple of months.

Ditto this.  We actually only pay $18 a month for our trash and recycling service, so two 95 gallon wheeled cans with weekly pickup.  It would have only been $12 a month for just the trash so maybe it is legitimate.

  • I love regional differences - we pay just $120/yr for trash.

Anyways, besides it being a promo rate, my other concern would be about permitting/proper disposal.  In some localities, trash is expensive because of how the communities are disposing of their waste - the technology they're using, plans for the future, etc.  With a rate that far off from the regular, I'd want to know that they're properly disposing of things as local laws require.

Other thought: your local trash fee could include (or rather, hide) city taxes that have nothing to do with trash, like police salaries, and this company doesn't have to pay that.

No kidding!  I can't imagine living in a town that doesn't have curb side trash pick up.  I realize that I pay for it with my property taxes, but to have to pay to have my garbage picked up out of pocket would just kill me.

  • Thank you for your responses. I have called my current company and they told me that the only thing I pay for is the service and the can... $55 worth! This new company said the price is locked in based on current averages, therefore could increased but she said she finds it highly unlikely as they have been offering the same price for years in their other locations.

I am just torn on what to do because I will admit it, I'm cheap but I don't want to switch and it not be what I thought and need to switch back because in the end that's more hassle then its worth!

I do know that on the flyer it clearly states: no contracts, no hidden fees, cart included, if you don't like us you can leave at any time. I don't know why this is so crazy difficult to find reviews, I mean you would think that if they have been accredited with the BBB since 2009 in Michigan there must be some sort of review online. I wish I would have just thrown the flyer away like I do all the other junk mail, then I wouldn't be contemplating... wouldn't possibly be saving though either...

     GEEZ!!!!Hmm

  • Maybe think of it this way: when people are unhappy, they complain.  With something like trash service, it's practically invisible unless something goes wrong.  I think no news is good news for this.
  • IME, switching services is as easy as a phone call so I wouldn't fret too much.  In our area, neighborhoods will be offered group discounts if a certain percentage of neighbors use the service.  Then, as more neighbors join in, the price continues to go down.

  • I just priced trash services for my area and the cheapest was $14/mo.  There are several companies, so there is competition.  When I lived in a different rural area in the same state with the same COL, we only had one option and were outside of city limits.  We had to pay a little under $200 every 3 months.

I'm not overly concerned about how simple it is to switch services. I know its only a matter of a phone call! The problem is just that b/c I am only billed quarterly I will have to figure out when and to schedule the new based on the old etc... to me that is kind of a hassle especially when I hate doing that sort of thing. I could only wish the cost would go down if more neighbors used the services. Right now we have 2 different trash removal companies in my neighborhood and possibly a 3rd if more than just myself utilize the offer that was given in yesterdays mail.

The only thing I have a major issue with is I really would like to stay with the current company but the cost is just too much! I called them to find out if they are willing to work with me price wise in order to keep my business and the girl I spoke with had an I don't really care about you as a customer tone. Her response was no we don't alter prices to keep business, if you switch eventually, you will be back! GRRR... But I know they have altered prices because my parents don't pay anywhere near the amount I pay. They pay more along the lines of the $12 a month the other company is currently offering me...

In my area of the country we have always had to pay out of pocket for curbside garbage pick-up. I'm used to it even though I hate it!

  • I would also check the fine print.  With the cheaper companies, they often have more limits.  The one we just signed up for charges $10 per bulk item when my old one would pick up one bulk item per week for no extra cost.  There is also a 10 bag or 5 32 gallon can limit and a can cannot weigh more than 50 lbs.  There are also a lot of weird rules about what kind of trash cans you can use and how certain things have to be bundled.  None of it was a big deal to us, but it is still something I would ask about.

  • It sounds like you don't really want to switch but feel like you need to because of the cost difference.

I think I would call your current company back and ask to speak with a supervisor if need be. Someone there is going to do something to keep your business, it's just a matter of finding the right person. Just like with the cable company or whatever the case may be. They have people who work specifically for retention of customers. I bet you can find someone else at the trash company who is willing to work with you on price.
