Spunky

Have you had to replace the tires on your Mini yet? Apparently we need to but I'm not sure if we want to go through the dealership or not.

Re: Spunky

  • I was forced to when I ran over a bunch of glass on the highway. Three in the matter of a week. Those were expensive because I went the dealership route. I did it because I needed to still get to work (H was deployed and we had just the one). The dealership gave me a new BMW to drive and even drove up to the city to drop my car off to me because I was so busy. SUPER worth it. In LA, it was anywhere between $250-300 a tire with tax, labor, etc

    Now, that being said --

You can go to the dealer or elsewhere but keep in mind the elsewhere needs to specialize in mini run flats. That way your run flat sensors don't go off by accident.

Other than the above flats, I've never had to replace my tires. They are supposed to last 50k+. You don't have to put run flats on it though. That is totally up to you.

  • Let me add that the 50k+ is based on how you drive. Some of my friends with the S cooper drive like crazy people and replace every 20k miles (just asked).

Have you had them rotated? Are they wearing on one side?

I did have one wearing oddly and they figured out the car was was pulling to the left. They fixed that, rotated them, and wallah!

I'm sure we will need to replace them when we get back and that will be expensive but that's okay. Anything to do with sensors I like to keep at the dealer or at the very least a mini qualified (I can't think of the term) shop.

  • We get them rotated pretty regularly. The guy at the dealership just mentioned it when we got it maintenanced this last weekend. He said that we could buy tires somewhere else(IE-online) and have them shipped to the shop and they'd put them on for us. I guess at this point we're trying to figure out which is cheaper. We don't have run flats, just regular tires. MH hates run flats, lol.  The main reason we're looking at buying somewhere else is we're looking at more of an all-season tire than the plain ones the dealership sells b/c of where we live.

Oh and we have 35K on the Mini. Yes, since April.

  • I PPH my run flats mostly because if I get a flat, well I can drive safely to wherever I need to. :)

I totally understand the all weather's though. We will probably look into those when we make our way out east later in the year. I would ask other shops around you to see if they have the tires and then have your dealer put them on. Sounds like you trust the guy which is all that really matters. I haven't bought tires online so I'm no help there.

35k since April?! I suppose you did move, so just use that as an excuse. lol Still loving it though?

  • K. Has been researching, he found the ones he wants. Now I'll call around and figure out if it's better to buy them online or from a shop somewhere. I love our dealership, I'll be sad when we move. I hope the one in Baltimore is just as awesome. I saw the guy who sold us ginger and I told him I was there for the 30k mile maintenance and he said "well, you drive it." lol. We love it. K is already picking out the next one. :) did you guys decide on a Jeep?

No on that jeep. :( You were right, it's a bit too girly and too small since he's tall. He likes the idea of the wrangler and the grand cherokee but the gas mileage part he can't come to terms with. He wants something that gets 25-30 around town. I like the Mitsubishi Outlander and he keeps going back to the X5 (but can't pull the trigger because it's so expensive). Once we get stateside and he has to choose, I think he'll end up with a Jeep or the Outlander.

  • What about a Nissan? An Xterra or Armada?

He hates the body styling. He's indecisive.

He is a man. So wait, he wants an SUV that gets 28-30? So, his choices are Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, that's all I've got. :P

I'm pretty sure we're set on the new Countryman. I want to get it all rallied out though, in true Mini style. All4, black tires, tinted windows, stripes, CooperS, manual. Got another year to go before we trade in my Jeep.

LOL So true! As for the mileage you are correct. The Outlander Sport has decent ratings and I've seen them around town. They are nice looking.

The countryman is awesome. Mini had a concept crossover SUV a few years ago but I'm not sure if anything came of it. I would buy that little suv in a heart beat.

  • I'll be honest, I had to look up what vehicle you were talking about b/c I'm not a fan of Mitsubishi. LOL. They are kind of cute.

What about the new Ford Explorer? It says they'll get about 28 on the highway and they're pretty nice looking.

I love the countryman. My bff just got one and she loves it. I totally would be a mini SUV but I think the countryman is a good compromise.
