Recommend your white noise machine

Something tells me that we discussed this recently. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good white noise machine? I like to have some noise in the background when I sleep, and the fan I use is driving DH nuts.

Re: Recommend your white noise machine

  • I have one I bought at Target that is just meh.  However....when I travel I use an app on my phone and it is amazing.  I should start using that all the time!  It's called relax and sleep and you can choose a variety of different sounds/choose their volume/play several at once.  I love it!

  • We just use a $10 fan from Target, or the humidifier during the winter.
  • I'm such a light sleeper and have always slept with some sort of white noise (fan, CD, noise machine, etc.).  DH snores like crazy, so the two of us just don't sleep in the same room well at all.  All the white noise drove DH nuts (he couldn't stand the repetitive nature of the white noise machines), so he did some research and ended up making a "pink noise" CD for me.  Don't know where he got it, but it's a 72 minute track of pink noise that I play on repeat in a CD player next to my side of the bed.  It's slightly obnoxious when it hits the end and starts over (I'm usually asleep by then anyway), but it's been wonderful (we've used it for probably 6 years now).  When we travel, I have an app for my iPad called Sleep Pillow that I use.  It's not nearly as effective for me, but I need something to drown out the snoring or I seriously won't sleep at all.

I've also been looking at this, though...

  • My daughter has used this one every night for the past 2 years.  I really like that the volume is adjustable and it has several nice sounds... although, she only uses the rain.  It has a timer as well (if you don't want it running all night).

  • I love my floor fan, but DH hates it. I think he hates tripping over it in the dark in the morning more than anything, and the fact that it's pretty big. So, that's why I'm looking into a white noise machine.

LOL why not just a smaller fan?

He hates fans. Period. Stick out tongue I love my fan...but I need something smaller I can put on my nightstand.

  • Tell him to wear ear plugs :D

Mine is like this and fits on DH's nightstand:

I love this thing!  I seriously cannot sleep without it.  I bought it a few years ago and it's the perfect white noise - just sounds like a fan.  I'm not sure if it would help with snoring but i don't notice the heat clicking on or small background noises that use to wake me up.  My sister even bought one for my nephew and he loves it.

  • Do you happen to suffer from allergies at all? I use an air purifier for that reason and it happens to be a fabulous white noise machine as well. You can buy small ones with filters that never need to be changed, just cleaned once in a while.
  • I downloaded a sleep app called Relax Melodies (Relax Oriental for iPhone) on my phone, and just use that for white noise. Lately I've been listening to Rain + Thunder, but I also like Cracking Ship + Whales + Waves. The app is free and it's from Ipnosoft, if that helps. Just keep in mind that you should probably keep your phone plugged in so that it doesn't die in the middle of the night.

  • I bought DH the Brookstone one about 5 years ago. He was working midnights, and sleeping during the day...not so easy with a crying baby! Now we are ALL addicted to it, even the baby. I'm sure a cheap one would do the same thing, but it was worth the 100 bucks I spent on it. I put it in the hallway, so one works for the whole family.

  • I used the Homedics sound machine as well - it has about 8 different options for noise, a volume level and a timer (if needed).  I listen to rain every night :)  I paid $20 for it at Bed, Bath, & Beyond about 7 years ago & it's still kickin'!
  • I have had a fan from 2001 I still use. No joke. DH complains about it, but it still works for me.

We are getting a white noise machine that is intended for babies soon, and it will be in our room for a while. I think it's a Homedics brand from Target. If I end up liking it I might buy another to have one in each room.

  • If you have a smart phone there are a lot of options for sleep noise. I have white noise, it has about 8 different types of sounds.
