Do You Ever Get Jealous?

Of your H/SO getting to go to places that you'll never get to see?

I'm jealous that T has gotten to see Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and Germany.  A friend of ours just sent us incredibly pictures from Afghanistan this morning.  Obviously I have the opportunity to visit Germany but Iraq and Afghanistan are never going to happen.  These places are the birth place of civilization...to see the history of these places alone would be amazing.  I'm also fascinated with Arab/Persian culture.

I understand deployments are not vacations but T has had some incredible experiences and seen some incredible things that make me jealous.

Re: Do You Ever Get Jealous?

  • I was really jealous when J went to Guam. That has been his only TDY thus far.

  • Yes. On this past deployment H got to spend time in Dubai and Portugal and I was super jealous.

He was jealous I got to sit at home in my PJs.

The grass is greener on the other side!

This. LOL. Iraq/Kuwait/Ireland/Germany was cool and all but there were days I just wanted to be home.

I am jealous of DH's best friend who was stationed in Italy(brought home a Porsche) and is now in Germany.

Yep, this is us.  H says he would give up visiting all those places to get home sooner, or to be home with me and the dogs instead.

H has been to Dubai, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Bahrain, and then lived has been stationed in Germany for deployments 3 times.  According to him though the only place I would have liked is Dubai, since the other places were pretty dirty.

I really want to meet him at a port this deployment, but will all the tensions in the middle east he wants me to hold off for now.

  • When H evacuated Egypt he got to spend the night in Athens. I wad completely jealous - I would have just walked the streets all night. But he had been locked down in the embassy for almost 2 weeks beforehand and sleeping when and wherever he could - which usually just meant 30 mins or so on the floor in his office very once in a while. He was so exhausted he just slept the whole time he was there until he had to go back to the airport to catch his flight to NY.

I'm determined to go to Iraq one day. Not now, obviously, but maybe in 10-15 years it will be better. One of my professors , who also happens to be my friend's mom, is the US's leading expert on Iraqi culture. She was a top advisor to President Bush and she testifies before Congress regularly. She spends about half of her time in Iraq. I'll manage to tag along as some kind of research assistant someday.

Other than that, I've been everywhere H has been. I'm sure that won't always be true, but I've done my fair share of traveling and will continue to do so.

  • J has done some amazing things and seen amazing places.  I never got to deploy when I was in.  When my unit was gearing up for deployment, J got shot.  My unit left me here because I had to take care of him.  I am beyond thankful that I was able to be home to care for him, but I have regrets about not going with my guys, too.

One of the things J was able to do that I am jealous about is spending Easter in the oldest Christian church on the planet.  For more than a year, US soldiers had no clue what the place was and they used it as a base.  It is was littered with old tanks and gear.  They were working on cleaning it up when J was there 4 years ago.  He brought home pictures of it.  I was in Awe.

  • Yes!  Although it hasn't been until this station that he's had more opportunities.  I could easily Space A to most of them, I just need to get the guts and paperwork to do it! And, he won't be going any where for a while!  Which is good, but also I know it makes me spoiled to having him home so much and having a few weeks off between classes.  After new baby gets here, he's going to be on a lot more training than he is now, unless they decide to keep him on as instructor for a full year!  Which would be awesome. I want to do Hawaii this summer for sure, Guam, maybe ( maybe  I'll wait until Honeybadger gets there?? ;-) ) Okinawa, And Thailand probably next year for a Photography Adventure.

  • I've been jealous of the European countries for a long time.  I'm pretty much jealous of anyone that has been out of the country.  I haven't even ever been to Canada.

As far as Iraq and Afghanistan I feel like I can look at pictures a million times but still not understand the climate/environment there.  I also hope to deploy myself someday but I guess that's not really what you mean by this post lol.

  • Ok, now I'm just jealous of all you ladies who get to go to different places period. One of the downside of being on the ARNG side is no PCSing (at least, not with K's MOS.)  I **love** to travel and it kills me that I've been stuck in the same city for the last 8 years. I'm ready for some change.

Let us sip our Starbucks and commiserate how unfortunate we are to never get to go anywhere.

  • E has been to Okinawa, Singapore, Thailand with the MC. Norway with this family. I'm jealous of most of the places his been mostly Norway.

I would love to go to Laos and Vietnam. I spent a semester in college doing tons of research on the Hmong people and I would absolute love to go spend some time there and learn more.

  • I have a passport, and I already have a lot of the same stamps on mine that he does on his. So no, I don't really get jealous, so much.

I am jealous of you ladies who don't have to move. It is a huge pain in the you-know-where, and I HATE it. I am sad that we are already looking at new assignments, I feel like we just got here. I hate everything about moving. Yes, yes, I knew I would be moving a lot, but I didn't know it would suck so much. But I really want to put down roots somewhere. Blah.

Already?  I thought this was going to be a long time assignment.

We are... we have a few years left. But they are already telling people to start thinking about what they want to do next. It's so fun (not). Apparently H needs to have his dream sheet turned in soon. Why, I have no idea.

    image
  • Nope, not really. H only goes to the Caribbean and I hate the sun :)

  • Yes!  I'm beyond jealous of his current job.  Living in Singapore, lots of other trips to SE Asian places.

But, we're travelers.  I'm not worried that I won't get to see most of those places.  Someday I will, whether with or without him.  I've traveled without H, just for fun, and I know he's jealous of that.

  • I'm jealous all the time.

Stan, "So Honey, how was your day?"

Smooch, "Oh you know, same old same old, we extracted a sniper team under heavy fire. How was your day?"

Stan, "Oh, I sold someone 10,000 worth of something they totally don't need. MLIA."

ETA: I've been all over Europe, he's been to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Indonesia, Phillipines, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan (mainland and Oki), and some other SE Asian countries. I'm pretty jealous, and bummed, because I would have liked to have done Thailand for our honeymoon, but we both decided to go someplace we've both never been.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • I'm not jealous of most of the places DH has gone, but I'm jealous of the experiences. That may not make sense. . .

I asked DH, just last night, if he was allowed to go to Morocco. I saw that Ryanair flies there and it intrigued me. I think it would be cool to hop over to another continent for a long weekend. While LO and I will be doing our share of trips, I hope, I would only feel comfortable going to Morocco with DH. I am looking forward to traveling to as many countries as possible and enjoyable, while we are living in Germany.
