Mirena and z-packs...

I know antibiotics and birth control pills don't mesh, but now that I have the Mirena (and am currently taking a z-pack, as well as other steroid meds for my bronchitis), this won't have any effect on me getting pregnant, right?

Re: Mirena and z-packs...

  • You should ask your doctor or pharmacist. The mode of action for Mirena isn't completely understood - although it is hormone-based, it may also prevent pregnancy by preventing implantation or by simply being present in the uterus (blocking sperm from the egg), as explained on the Mirena website.

Given that, I'm not sure anyone, even a medical professional, will have a valid answer. If you can't handle/take a chance with pregnancy, use back-up for a month... It's a PITA, yes, but better than the alternative.

ok- let me make this clear- I def do NOT want to get pregnant. So I really hope I don't have to worry.

eta: I have nothing to worry about. thank goodness, just verified with 2 pharmacists

  • I am not giving any medical advice, but I have a Mirena and my doc told me that antibiotics do not affect it.
