The Broc Is Hopeless About Fashion Post.

I'm down 30 lbs from last year, plus I don't have the whole odd post-baby body shape going on anymore, so I need new clothing.  As you all know I am absolutely hopeless with just about anything girly.  I have a few tanks and tees that fit pretty well, and most of my workout gear still fits fine.  Oddly enough, I have a decent complement of shoes, though I need to get new flip flops for summer.

Which pieces would you recommend anyone add to their wardrobe, if their wardrobe is unspeakably lame?  Is there anything you're lusting over for this season in particular?  Should I just give up and wear a muumuu covered in crumbs and kid smears?

halp!

  • I'm a big fan of sundresses. I rarely wear shorts anymore.

  • Me too. I never wear shorts, only dresses when it's hot. They are much more forgiving of any body flaws and I find them to be more comfortable too.

  • I live in maxi dresses during the spring/summer - they keep me cool and cover my legs/hide my tummy.

I'm a big believer in versatile clothing (well, other than my maxi dresses - I can't wear those to work or anything).  On weekends I'll wear jeans and a cute top, and if I'm going anywhere I'll throw on a light jacket or scarf to snazz it up.

I love that bright color is "in" again.  It's so happy.  I think I may actually bend to the trend and purchase a pair of colored pants.  I'm thinking red.

    This is my siggy.
  • I never gave up bright colors...I just can't make myself be a neutral girl! It's too whomp whomp for me!

Do you have a pair (or two) of jeans that fit really well? Since you don't work in an office I'd say that's a staple of everyday wear. Also, a couple cardigans - one in a basic color (white/black) and one in a fun color (I have kelly green!) that you can throw over neutral tops to cute-sy them up.

I definitely ditto the sundress voters - I LOVE a sweet cotton dress in a fun color and a nice shape - and then if you need to you can make it a bit more dressy with accessories.

  • For warmer weather, jersey dresses are my best friend. Any dresses, really - find a few in basic colors and then dress them up or down as you like. I will throw a cardigan, light jacket/blazer/jean jacket, or scarf over them. You get the comfort of a crumb-covered muumuu without actually having to give up and wear the muumuu.

Any wardrobe items that can multi-task are worth having. A good pair of jeans, some basic blouses/tops that are comfortable and flattering in whatever colors you like best, and then you can change the look with different belts (if you like them, I look like shiit in belts with my lumpy middle), necklaces, shoes, what have you.

Apparently neon is big this season, but ... I can't bring myself to go there or recommend it to another grown adult.

I have nothing of anything dude.  I have one pair of jeans, but I have to wear them with some hardcore belting or they literally fall off.  It's kind of awesome. I'm hitting up Old Navy because their new jean schematics (lol) intrigue me.

I'm definitely getting a few dresses, though with Joaquin in the 'uppy UPPPYYYYY' phase I'm afraid she might fingerbang me on a daily basis.  Just the price I'll have to pay I guess.

  • You crack me up! Just wear bloomers, isn't that what all you moms do?

Try the Diva at Old Navy, it's a good cut for shorties like us. Dark wash please.

  • I have a whole board on Pinterest devoted to cute Polyvore outfits I'll never be able to recreate. But outfits like these are pretty cute, basic and almost universally flattering (let's hope they embed correctly):

ETA, Pinterest fail. Here they are as images.

  • Yeah, you need a pair or two of jeans that fit you well. Darker is better. They will fade with time, but dark jeans can be dressed up so they are more versatile.

Also, t-shirts. You can get some nice tees with some sort of detail on them so they are not plain or boring, like a print or a cool neckline, maybe a random ruffle. Then, you feel like you are just wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but you actually look nice.

  • Thanks for the rec, abs. I'll definitely look for those!

Those highlight my one legit issue with dressing with the kid, Interro.  I have a BUNCH of nice, quirky statement jewelry, but Joaquin is all OOH SHINY I MUST TOUCH AND HAVE.  There are a couple pendants I wear on ribbon, and she loves rings, but everything else is kind of a bad idea.

  • Yeah, the accessories aren't ideal for kid-friendly dressing. (All of those sets were pre-made stuff that other people made, just overall ideas for you.) The basic outfits are fairly versatile but you definitely don't want her hang gliding from a statement necklace or something.

The only really questionable kid-friendly accessory is the coral necklace - I think the rest would either stand up to kid poking/pulling or be uninteresting enough (stud earrings, watch) that they'd escape most destruction.

Side note, I really like all three of those outfits you posted Interro, I like to think that's my style - classic and comfy, feminine but not frilly, with a little bit of trendy mixed in. That's what I'm going for anyway, when I actually wear street clothes (which, as you know, is rare!)

  • I am a big fan of having a few good fitting pairs of jeans in my closet. I have a few light weight cardigans in various colors that I can toss over most shirts or tanks and then 3 pairs of flats in black, brown and gray that I can put together an outfit with. In the summer I am a fan of flowing dresses with sandals. I usually just hit gap outlet, nordstrom rack, banana republic outet and tjmaxx for my clothes. The last pair of old navy jeans I had would gap too much so i was always hiking them up after about 2 hours but the size down wouldnt initially fit over my big ass so i had to give up on old navy jeans.

  • I just got a bonus at work last week, so I ordered a few new things for spring. Bright colors are in and it seems that peasant style tops are too (or maybe they are just for the fat girls, I don't really know).

I love lacy camis with cardigans.  Prints and ruffles seem to be popular too.

Although, you don't sound like you're a peasant top, lace and ruffles kind of girl.

Also, congrats on losing the baby weight.  17 yrs later and I STILL have baby weight...LOL

  • I'm watching this post with interest.

    And 30 lbs, broc...that's great :)

    Look with your special eyes.
  • No, Morty, this is in addition to baby weight, but I feel like a douche if I say I lost 50. I was at 167 prepreg, was over 190 when I popped, and now I'm below 140. And I know it kind ofmakes me a douche to clarify this too. Lol.

Wow..that's even more awesome!  That doesn't make you a douche at all.  It's something to be proud of! I know all too well how hard it is to lose weight.
