Long story short, we need a place to stay in Rome the beginning of May. The last minute planning is making it difficult to find a hotel or apartment in our price range AND within walking distance of things. Suggestions?
Prefer to keep it under $200 usd, but I will push it higher if I need to. We'll be arriving by train, and leaving by plane... so close proximity to public transportation is a must.
Re: Rome Lodging
Take a look at www.rentalinrome.com. We rented an apartment through them last September per the advice of a co-worker. We had an apartment in an awesome location just off of Campo de'Fiori. We paid 110 Euro per night for the room plus a 20 Euro agency fee. I have an entry in my blog here on the apartment rental.
We stayed at the Hotel Ripa in the Trastevere district.
The smallest room there would probably be within your budget.
It is about a 10-minute walk from a railway station.
We stayed here and thought it was in a good location: http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/38-viminale-street-de-luxe.en.html?dva=0
Maybe it's because we were there during the off season, but we paid well under $200 and our room was pretty nice (crystal chandelier, tv in the bathroom, etc.).
