For those that had requested last week that I follow up with some of the estimates I received from the moving companies, quotes are below. Note that they will be packing our entire 3 bdrm apartment, including all furniture (and providing all packing materials), and then moving it into our new flat on the following day. Two men are provided for packing on Day 1, and 4 men are provided on Day 2 to finish packing and move. Rates also reflect that they have to carry all the furniture down four flights of stairs! Luckily, no stairs in the new flat.
Quote 1: ?1368
Quote 2: ?1548
Quote 3: wouldn't give a fixed all in price, just rate of ?55/hr for 2 men and ?65/hr for 3 men. Plus VAT and we would have to buy all packing materials separately.
These include VAT but exclude the bourough parking charges, which will cost us another ?264 to the council! Yikes. This is higher than we were hoping for, but given this is inclusive and full service and we have a lot of stuff, its not completely out of line. We could keep searching, but since our move is next week we don't really have the time. These were also all recommended to me by coworkers, which makes me a bit more comfortable.
Given what level of service you want, and how much stuff you have to move, maybe these can at least serve as a benchmark.
ETA: For reference, we're in Kensington.
Re: As requested: London moving costs
Thank you SO much for the follow up Sushi! We are going to be moving out of Kensington from 2 flights up to Clapham - up 4 flights! 2 bedrooms full of stuff, and that was about what i was expecting...except the parking charges - I hadn't even thought about that!
Can I ask which companies you sourced?
Thanks so much Sushi! We just heard back from the letting agency today and I think we are staying in our flat now. We got the landlord to a 75pound increase (she wanted 125more) and we negotiated for the 2 month break clause we were hoping for.
We really don't want to stay here and I think we pay a crazy amount, however because we are hoping to go back to the states this year it's not worth the hassle of trying to move here. Also, I think we are going to have to pay for our whole move back and that's going to be a lot!
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

chelbel - that's great you don't have to move. We're in the same position re. hoping to move back in the next year so didn't want to move. But we had no choice
Mrs. SC - we ended up going with a company called Burke & Wills. We also looked at Southpark Removals. I wasn't expecting the parking charges either, it's a little ridiculous!
