So, the big race is over. Then what?

I'm scared about packing on pounds after my first half in April. I am mentally used to eating calories that are appropriate for my training. And, really, I'm just an eater. Immediately following my race we are going on vacation too, which doesn't help. Aside from this, I don't know what I'm supposed to do for post-race workouts. I'm new to this running business. What says H & F?

  • I don't know how you are feeling about training right now, but when I got towards the end even though it was only a half, I was getting burnt out on the rigid schedule.  After my half I didn't really run for 2 weeks. I did spinning and the cross trainer with maybe an easy run thrown in.  Then I just focused on keeping my 6 mile base and started doing hills to mix it up.

  • You could pick some smaller races to do. Try some cross training or new classes t the gym. Try some other sport like cycling or swimming. Keep a focus on staying healthy. You could also run "base miles" until you decide what to do. How about NROWL? (errr...the weight lifting book??)
  • Well, you could train for another race, maybe a shorter one, then you could work on your speed instead of focusing so much on distance.

Or you can just run 3 or 4 miles, 3-4 days a week, just to keep your running base up.  You said you're going on vacation afterwards, one of my fave things is to go for a run on vacation.  You get to explore a new place, there's different scenery and it's just nice to be outside.  It doesn't have to be far, even a mile or two is nice.

You can also try some other activities like weight training, take a class that you've always wanted to do, ride your bike if you have one, etc.  I get bored easily, so I like to do a lot of activities.  It helps to keep me interested and not dread my workouts.

  • When the big race is over....

I find another event to compete in.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • Track your calories and keep up with exercise. You may not be running as many miles, but doing different activities helps.
  • I like having another race lined up! also it's a nice break sometimes as well, so I enjoy that and will mix up my routine.
