Poll: how much does your dvr hold?

I was talking to a friend last night and she mentioned that she has an entire season of 2-3 different shows on her dvr and it's only about 23% full.  Ours doesn't hold nearly that much.  It has about 15 hours saved and is 55% full.  How much does yours hold?  Do you know if that depends on the cable provider or just the specific cable box?

Re: Poll: how much does your dvr hold?

  • I'm not sure, but we have full seasons of 2 shows, and DH also has like 6 hours of random basketball games on there, plus a few extra shows. I would guess we currently have about 30 hours' worth of stuff on there, but it's nearly full (like 89%).

Our old box held way, way less. An hour long show used to take up 6% (takes about 2% now). It also depends if you are recording in HD, since that uses up  more space.

  • If definitely depends on your cable provider. We recently switched companies because of a move and our new box holds so much more than the old one. I was always having to watch things or delete them on the old box, and now I have movies and tons of shows saved without ever going over 30%.
  • I just had this talk with my sister.  Both of us have DVR's through Comcast.  She has 80 hours of tv recorded and she's at 27%.  I have 40 hors recorded and I'm at 87%.  Neither of us records in HD.  I don't understand why her DVR is so magical.

  • Interesting.  I'll try recording non-HD channels on the off chance that will make a difference. And, not that I think it will do any good, but I'll give a call to Time Warner to see if there's a chance they have different boxes that might hold more stuff.  There is so much stuff on the History Channel and Discover Channel, among others, that I would love to watch, but there's no room.  Thanks!

  • HD does take up triple the space of a non HD show.

  • The DVR is basically a harddrive.  Some have more storage capabilities than others.  Recorded shows take up space just like files on your harddrive.   Different providers use different sized drives.

  • Ours holds well over 100 hours of HD programs (plus we have 2 so sometimes we have an insane amount of stuff recorded). Certain shows I like to let almost the entire season record and then I'll watch it near the end.

  • On average, we can have 100 shows on HD saved. (That's a good balance of 30-60 minute shows with an occasional movie tossed in)
