When you travel

What things are on your "must get done" list before you go?

I always feel like I am forgetting something.

Re: When you travel

  • Pay rent,electric,water,dsl&cable,cell phones,insurance.

make sure the hookers have food and water or someone to care for them while we are gone.

dont leave clothes in the washer.

dont leave trash in the trash can.

make sure someone knows we are leaving and where we are staying just in case.

obsessively check to make sure everything is unplugged that needs to be, the doors are locked and closed.

  • My list is short...FI's list is very, very long and OCD-like.

Between the two of us we have more than enough covered.

I, personally, just like to make sure everything that has water run out of it is shut off, furnace/ac is set to a low/high level so it's not on the whole time.  Nothing in the fridge that will be able to walk out of the fridge on it's own when we get back.

    Doors locked.

FI's list is way too long and he checks things I didn't even know were at risk of causing issues.

  • PP, if the hookers eat the trash, do I still have to take it out?

Pretty much just shopping and packing.  I always need to buy a brand new puff sponge.  I usually have to restock my normal toiletries.

Then it's really just packing, making sure the cats have enough food and water and locking up the house.

  • I always forget to have the post office hold the mail. We have fraudnprotection on all our cards so we haveto call them and give our itinerary too. My special snowflake thing is that I put baking soda in the drains and baking soda plus shampoo in the toilets so it doesn't smell like stagnant ass when we open the door. I also put lots of containers of water in the fridge and freezer so it uses less energy to keep themcold while I'm away.

Oh, and I like to clean the house before we leave.  Nothing crazy... just so we don't have clutter when I get back after a vacation and am already bummed out enough.

I think mr. imoan and I are going-away-simple because we don't do most of the crap anyone is talking about.  I've never even CONSIDERED having the post office hold the mail.  We have friends who, when we go on our 4 day annual ski trip with them, have their mail put on hold.  We're only away for 2 actual postal deliveries.  It's so odd to me.

  • I don't travel often enough or for long enough stretches of time to have a list.

Sometimes I go 4 days without getting the mail when I'm home.

I like the baking soda idea, Broc.

I did put our mail on hold. I don't usually, but our box is teeny tiny and we'll be gone 2 weeks.

  • Pay the bills

Make sure the cats have enough food and water

Arrange pet-sitting and leave a note and a cheque for the pet-sitter on the kitchen table.

    Take out the garbage

Make sure all the doors and windows are locked

Make sure someone knows we're going to be gone for a while, knows how long we're going for and how to reach us if they have to. This is usually reserved for someone who I know won't bother us unless it's an emergency.
