Hip Flexor Injury

Has anyone experienced this?  How long did it take to heal?  I had this pain starting back in Aug after a Vegas trip, walking around so much.  The weekend I came home I went on a bicycle ride that left me in a lot worse shape after going up a steep hill.  The pain lasted about 2 months, meanwhile I continued working out and stretching it.  Occasionally I would still get pain when I sleep on that hip.

Now I've injured it again and I think worse.  I'm not even sure how.  I did an elliptical one morning and danced a few hours in heels that night.  Woke up the next day and could barely walk.  Its been 3 weeks and the pain has gotten a little better but I'm still basically in pain all day/night.  It effects my sleep.  I cant walk properly or do stairs well.  I went to the Dr and they did an x-ray, showed nothing wrong.  She prescribed PT so I guess I'll be trying that but I'm just wondering how long this pain can go on for and if my hip will ever be the same.

Re: Hip Flexor Injury

  • I had a hip flexor/glute injury last year from running that took me out for 2 months, but that was because I let it go waaaaay too long.

I could barely walk 10 feet without bursting into tears. It was insanely painful.

I got in with a sports chiropractor who specializes in active release technique and friction massage. 2 treatments in with her and I had no pain whatsoever. As long as I've been diligent about stretching and doing the exercises she gave me, I've not dealt with that pain or injury since then.

Good luck! I know it's really painful and not the most fun thing to deal with.

  • A chiro that specializes in ART (like Mush mentioned) had me running pain free in less than two weeks.  And like you, I wasn't able to sleep comfortably from my hip pain (mine was my TFL but my flexors were also involved)
  • I had leg pain that turned out to be a fracture. The xray showed nothing however, the MRI showed all sorts of injuries.
  • Hi Wine, my dear. I had a hip flexor injury a few years ago. After some serious PT (I don't know the name of it, but the therapist wore thumb cots, dug in deep, then pulled/spread deep under my skin), I was feeling better, and it didn't bother me until I started training for my half mary. I need to go back to the doc but I am afraid of being told I need to take a break. I think you should stick with the PT.

Hi :)  I am waiting to get my PT scrip in the mail but I went ahead and scheduled an eval for next week.  My Dr thinks I was overcompensating for another weaker muscle but I just cant believe I'd be in this much pain, for this long, from a pulled muscle.
