Article Re: Vaccines and Autism
Someone posted this article on FB today. Looks like there is going to be a report on it by Andersen Cooper tonight. I know some of you ladies work with special needs or know some people with autism. I thought I would pass it along.

Re: Article Re: Vaccines and Autism
It makes me sick the damage this false information has done. I know there's no convincing some people now. People like Jenny McCarthy have made it 100 times worse. The fact that kids have not received immunizations puts us all at risk.
Regardless, I've always said I'd much rather have an autistic kid than one who gets polio, etc.

If you are vaccinated you shouldnt be at risk, right? I mean that is why you get vaccinated.
vaccinations set up a base immunity, not full immunity, so you can still get sick, but you're more likely to be able to fight off the disease if you come in contact with it.
I didn't realize that the article was from last year, I actually wanted to watch the report that Anderson Cooper did.
My feeling is similar to the above ladies. By not getting children vaccinated risks spreading of more things. I was adamant that when Mags went to daycare, that the daycare required kids to be vaccinated.
A vaccine is quite specific to whatever strain of the disease is currently rampant. You get vaccinated against that strain (which may or may not work for similar strains). When other people around you aren't vaccinated and they get infected, there's more of a chance for the disease to mutate into a form that the vaccine doesn't cover/is generally more agressive.
When you have groups of people refusing to vaccinate (espeically over scientifically incorrect information), it puts everyone - vaccinated or not - at risk.

Exactly! And there's also the risk to infants who are not old enough to be vaccinated yet.
I have a couple of friends who have decided not to vaccinate as well for pretty weak reasons. Wyatt doesn't play with their kids, and won't as long as I have control over that. I don't think people realize how selfish it is not to immunize.
Thanks Kate!
I'll chime in-as always a day late and a dollar short....
I'm all for doing your own thing with parenting...I'm pretty crunch as is, HOWEVER, I think vaccines are a pretty big must do for parents. People seem to regularly cite "Herd Immunity" for not getting their kids vxed, but if there is no "herd" then there's no "herd immunity"....Plus, Kate is totally on point with her comments.
I have no issues with a delayed schedule or splitting vx's between multiple appointments as long as they are all done within a very reasonable amount of time. Not vxing because some random non-medical based study told you it was bad or a friend "never got vxed and SHE is fine" is just plain rediculous in my opinon.

I'd never even put much thought into whether I'd allow my children to play with others who aren't vaccinated. I think that especially at a young age, I'd rather not take the chance. But I wonder how you'd even know unless the parent is upfront about it when joining play groups, etc.
I was part of a discussion about this on a natural birth blog where 90% of the people there do not vax. Apparently the 'religious reasons' is a big fat loop hole so that basically anyone who doesn't 'believe in' vaccination can get their kids into public school. You don't have to have a particular religion that doesn't support it, you just have to have the 'belief' that it isn't good for your kid. The whole thing made me sick to my stomach. I was not a popular poster in that thread.
