?!Getting pregnant on the pill?!

How many of you know of or have personally gotten pregnant while on the pill? Not, because you missed a pill, but gotten pregnant even though you took your pill every day. (not the exact time, but in the same hour or two every day). I have read so many things: Online I've seen many women that have gotten pregnant even after they have taken their pill every day at the same exact time. Than, my obgyn tells me "You wont get pregnant, you wont get pregnant. Just take it every day, you dont even have to worry about taking it at the EXACT time. Just take it every day. Dont worry!" So she made me feel so comfortable, but the more I think about it....maybe I shouldnt be feeling that comfortable? I dont know. We wouldnt be upset if we got pregnant, but we want to wait a little while and be married for a little while (2years). Any opinions? :) Thanks!

Re: ?!Getting pregnant on the pill?!

  • I was on the pill for 15 yrs, did not take it at the same time everyday and probably missed a few here and there in those 15yrs. I, have never gotten/been pregnant.

Honestly, the only reason I now have a paragard instead of being on the pill is because I noticed as I was getting older my body was starting to act wonky with the hormones from the pill.

  • Bear in mind that the pill is *only* as good as the patient who takes it.

Read carefully -- certain drugs may render the pill ineffective or less effective than it should be -- antibiotics is one of them.

So it would be possible, then, to get pregnant at that point --- use a backup method of contraception until the meds for that prescription is taken and gone.:)
  • I've taken the pill for about 15 years and only gotten pregnant when I stopped the pill and actively tried to get pregnant.

  • I share your concern. I 've been freaking out a lil lately. I just started Lo Loestrine Fe 2 months ago. After the first pill pack I got a period for a whole week. Then 2 weeks later I was spotting. Now this week I was due for my period again and I haven't gotten it. I took 2 pregnancy tests; one during the spotting and one this week and they both came out that I wasn't pregnant. I called the doctor today because I am paranoid and want to make sure that I take care of myself and they said that that is normal to happen on this pill.

To go back to one someone said about presciptions - I have heard that as well that certain medications can cause birth control to be inactive while on it. Your doc should warn you of that when he/she prescribes you something but it is best to always read the labels on the medications to be safe.

    This.

I've been on the pill for 13 years.  I have never taken it at the same time every day and there have been times I've forgotten to take it 2 days in a row and then double up for 2 days.  I've never gotten pregnant.  But I do use a backup method when on antibiotics.

  • the only people i know who got knocked up on the pill were not using it correctly ... off the top of my head my upstairs neighbor got pregnant because she didnt use back up birth control while on antibiotics and on the pill
  • Your chance is 1 in 100. That's the stats. If you don't trust the pill, you can use it in combination with condoms. You can also learn your cycle and use charting, referenced in the book Taking Charge of your Fertility.
  • For us, the paranoia outweighed the pleasure, so we started using two methods at all times. Then we don't have to worry about "if this happens, we need to do this" kind of stuff. Use condoms, spermicidal lube or temp charting (super easy, and good info to know for when you do want to try and get pregnant.)

This, this and this!!!!  I am epileptic and my carbamazopine causes the pill to be inactive, however my doc at the time told me no, when I asked her about it.  3 months later I was back in her office in tears asking her how this could be and she told me she thought it was only in higher doses that there would be a problem with it.  My meds are at very low levels, so she didn't "think" I had to worry.  Please note, I found another doctor ASAP.  While I love my son with all my heart, I now do my own research to back up a doctor's opinion.

Thank you, you made me feel so much more at ease! I am on my 5th month with Loestrine 24 FE and have not had a "real" period since the 1st month. I don't get my period on the 4 brown pills, it comes just as spotting the 2nd week of the pack. I hate it. I am actually getting ready to switch to another pill because even though it is nice to have a hardly there period for 2 to 3 days, I kind of like the assurance of a real period!

  • I tried to sell at least three children that were born this way. He said he was fixed. It was only later that I found he wanted a heir. I didn't know that under the right Satanic rituals even men can birth the son of lucifer and his demon cousins and brother inlaws!?

  • One work of caution, your doctor will tell you that it's fine to skip a period every so often, and you won't have any lasting side effects, but my body personally simulated a pregnancy when I did that. I'd been on the pill for months, then I found myself having about every possible sign of pregnancy. I went to talk to the pharmacist, and he told me it was a common side effect of skipping the period pills
  • I agree with you! Ever since I got on this pill, I've been paranoid that I am pregnant. I don't know what to do. I'm not due for my period til next week and now I started spotting again yesterday. Grr.
  • I religiously took to the pill for years, and also used a diaphragm and spermicide and it took us exactly two weeks after the wedding to get pregnant. Guess someone has to be in that 0.001% or whatever.
