Question for the Paleo eaters

I started eating Paleo on Monday, basically trying to get myself ready for a Whole Life challenge my box is putting on later this month and to try something different with my diet/lifestyle. I was feeling ok Monday and Tuesday, but today I feel really tired and lethargic. I read this has something to do with your body adjusting to no grains or dairy and to just get through it. I'm wondering if any Paleo eaters here went through this period after starting Paleo? I'm ready to work my way through it but hope it doesn't last too long.

Re: Question for the Paleo eaters

  • It's definitely normal from what I hear.

I didn't go Paleo but I cut out grains about 5 weeks ago and I definitely had a couple of days of weirdness.

Pretty common. Usually called carb flu. Hang in there it gets much better. How long it lasts just depends on the person. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Totally normal. My DH had it for a month +, my chiropractor did a month long Paleo challenge at her CrossFit box and experienced the same thing. In them I've seen that the better shape you're in before starting Paleo, the more of an adjustment to how you feel with regard to lethargy. This isn't to say this is true for everyone, just anecdotes.

My chiro ate mostly whole grains, a lot of veggies, some meat before starting Paleo.  She is not really into fruit or sweets, but likes protein bars (which she couldn't eat b/c it was largely soy protein). She is an avid CrossFitter, loves to run, swim, bike. Same with my DH - he works out 8 times per week and mixes things up all the time (kettlebells, spinning, bands, lifting, tabatas). I was (still am) a fatso who dreads working out and I felt great, with tons of energy, like 3 days in.

  • Yes. It's very normal to feel that way when cutting grains and sugar and going lower carb. It's essentially a withdrawal process and can be pretty rough (headaches, lethargy, etc). It's called the "carb flu" because it can actually make you feel like you have the flu. The worst of the symptoms passes within a week, the lethargy for me can persist as long as two weeks. It helps me to think of it as withdrawal becaue that puts it in perspective. Make sure you are eating enough and staying hydrated....beyond that...you'll just have to stick it out.

On the positive side, I feel amazing while eating this way.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies. It's good to know that what I'm feeling is not uncommon, and all I have to do is stick with it and it will pass. I am excited to see where eating Paleo leads me and I know if I can get through this first week, I'll be feeling much better.

  • Make sure when you eat you are including sufficient fat and protein. Incomplete meals can do this to you as well as what all the other posters said above. I've been paleo since the end of September and I have never felt better! good for you!!

  • I went through that. In fact, the 2nd day I didn't want to eat anything the first half of the day and I felt so sick and nauseous I actually threw up.
