CN: Michigan women wins $1mil lottery and still collecting food stamps.

"Clayton downplayed her wealth, saying she took the $1 million in a lump sump, which meant about half immediately went to taxes. "I feel that it's OK because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay," she said. "I have two houses."

It's people like her who make me look like an idiot when I try to defend the welfare system.

  • The article doesn't really say, but I saw this on HLN this morning and wondered:  Did she ever have to reapply for food stamps?  Or did she just keep collecting them because she had previously qualified?  Do you have to report your assets for food stamps?  This is weird.

I want to trash her about her lip ring, but I am known to wear a stud in my nose from time to time so I'll leave my hypocrisy at that.

I am always amazed at how many people take advantage of systems ment to provide aid to the NEEDY. Her level of entitlement makes my skin crawl. ie she needs food stamps because she now has to support 2 homes and a new care. cry me a effing river lady. (In my sexiest JT voice)

  • I want to punch her in the face.  Who the eff told you to buy a second home that you're now claiming is making you struggle?  Also, Michigan is poor, so that house probably didn't even cost a quarter of what you took home.  And you're likely renting out the other house.  That car probably cost you like $15k tops if it's brand new.  How the eff are you going to say your struggling?

I hope they make her pay back all of the food stamp money she collected since she won, and I hope they take some legal action against her for falsely collecting benefits.  Similar to having to inform unemployment when you get hired I would think you are supposed to inform welfare programs when you come into money.

  • Someone answer my questions!!!eleventy!!

  • In the video I'm pretty sure she said that they just kept sending the benefits card so she kept using it.  And she said she deserves it so as long as they keep sending it to her she'll keep using it.

As for reporting your income or anything, I think you just report it when you first apply, but I could be wrong.  I really don't know how it works, but clearly they don't check up on you and you financial worth at all.

Holy shitballs, if you dont have to prove your need they just keep sending you stuff?? Someone needs to get one that. I'm very pro welfare helping those in need of welfare. And very against moronic....morons who are not in fact, in need. Someone with a greater understanding of this needs to come learn me up....

I've worked with developmentally disabled adults, and they got food stamps but I swear to goodness I remember going through a shitton of paperwork to renew it.  Maybe I'm misremembering because it was a while ago.  I don't know.  Maybe it was social security.  Someone has to know the answer!

    Shot first, questions later.
  • Yeah something about not renewing it every so many years doesn't seem right. I hope.

  • I tried googling Michigan's food stamp program, but couldn't find anything about how often to reapply.  I googled general food stamp reapplication and it said usually every 3-6 months you have to reapply.

I know for WIC you have to have a meeting at the office every so often to go over eligibility (at least from my understanding) so I would assume food stamps are the same.

Honestly though I wouldn't be surprised if not.  There is so much wrong with the welfare and food stamp system.  I feel bad for the people who actually do need the assistance and have trouble qualifying.
