DH told me not to stew... but I'm stewing. (Vent)

I have PCOS aswell as a significant amount of weight to lose, 70lbs, I've already lost 21. Well I was at the doctors today and we started taking about my weight. She told me that I should start the medifast diet, http://www.medifast1.com/index.jsp. I go on to tell her that losing weight is more about becoming in control of my eating and exercise habits instead of just dropping the pounds. Her response, "Oh this can totally be a lifestyle change." Bull ***! I got fat over 6+ year of not exercising and eating too much. It didn't happen over night. And I'm not going to starve myself and eat chemicals to become magically thin.

She then went on to tell me that I was too fat to run (jog) and I should pick another exercise. I listen to my body, have proper fitting shoes and I'm enjoying slowly changing my body through eating clean, running and lifting. She can kiss my big running buns!

Think that was the last time I saw her!

  • I'd be pissed too. You are on the right track and you know it --so don't let her get you down.  I doubt I'd go back either unless you want to school her on the 'right' way to do it once you reach your goal (but she probably won't remember you or her advice so, your DH is right, just move on).

  • It sounds like you're already on track, I would just ignore her "advice". How frustrating! Just keep on doing what you're doing cause it sounds like you are on the right already!

Agree. Congrats on the 21lbs so far. I too have PCOS, Are you an IR PCOSer? I am and was on metformin to help control the pcos, it really helped with all the things that come along with PCOS.

I just started working out again after having my baby & being lazy. Let me know if you have any Q's I can try to help.

I'm not IR. They had me on metformin for about a year but I didn't notice any changes besides having tummy troubles. What kind of changes have you noticed with the medication? How long have you been taking it? One thing that I've really noticed a change in once I stopped taking it was hair growth, in unlady like places. But I think that has more to do with the testosterone then my insulin.

Good luck with getting back into working out!

  • I also have PCOS (not IR, not on metformin), and my doc seemed happy about me joining WW, but I didn't ask "permission" to run.  I figure I've now made it 4 months of running without dropping dead, so chances are that I was ok running.  =/

Sorry your doc wasn't more supportive.  That blows.

  • One of my good friends started at just over 200 and is down to 135 - she did it by counting calories and running (with other exercises mixed in).

  • Erincassidy06~~

I was on it for over a year while TTC, I noticed it helped with the belly fat, acne and the 60+ cycles. But that is just me. I was told that having pcos, you should be on birth control to help with the symptons of pcos. (But every Dr is different, along with every person)

I will be going back on the met. soon again to help with ttc. But I am hoping of losing a bit of weight first. But will be going back to the dr in sept/oct to get meds again to get pg.

  • I would totally give this doctor the side eye. I'd say you are sensible and are doing things the healthy way!
  • Glad you not listening to her! Keep at it and great job!

  • Hello! Fellow PCOSer and hypo nestie here.

There are good doctors out there. Unfortunately I had many like the one you describe who did nothing but de-motivate me and basically tell me I'm lying about my diet and exercise levels because I was about 40-50 lbs overweight all my adult life.

Fast forward to losing 37.5 lbs and I finally found a doctor (endocrinologist I pushed and pushed to see) who was excited to hear how I did it and is now referring me to a PCOS specialist who will be equally interested in what I've done to lose the weight. I've always been active and eaten a clean, wholegrain, mostly vegan diet but recently I've stuck to a 1200-1500 calorie 95% vegan diet with lots of running, lifting and general exercise - at least 5 days a week for 1-2 hours since August.

I hope you can find a doctor who listens to your common sense and encourages you to take charge of your lifestyle.

HUGE congratulations on losing 21lbs. I know how much you probably had to run to do that.

  • fwiw, i'd find another doctor.  i'd put money on it that she (or her office) is getting some sort of kick-back to promote medifast.

and good for you, for doing things the right way!  keep up the great work!!!

  • I would definitely ignore her.

My NP was fully supportive of my choices.  I was new to their practice so we did a full check up and was on board with me doing WW and being active at the Y.

She wanted me to lose 10% by the summer, which is more than doable.

I hope you find a doctor that's supportive and more realistic about yours goals. And congrats on that 21lbs!!

  • I am so glad you are smart enough to know what is right and not to listen to that quack!

I started at 227 lbs jogging and watching what I ate. I am down to 181 now and still going. Training for a half marathon!

Keep up the great work, seriously. You will be successful if you just stick to what you've been doing. Great job!

  • Not only would I change doctors, I would also write reviews on every website possible.

  • I think it's really sad that doctors are promoting that.

Screw her and good for you for doing it the right way!

  • That's... horrible.  I agree, I would not be going back to her.  Congrats on the weight you have lost.  You know you're on the right track so keep it up and don't let one crappy doctor put you down!
  • I cannot believe your doctor is promoting that crap diet AND telling you not to run!  No dietician I know would ever recommend that diet. You are being smart and safe and healthy and you are certainly on the right track.  Keep up the good work and remember her awful attitude to keep you motivated!
  • Good for you for standing your ground!  A coworker of mine did the Medifast diet for the 6 months or so leading up to her wedding and while she lost weight, she was also eating powdered oatmeal or soup every.damn.day for lunch (among other things)...and of course, once she went off the diet after her wedding the weight started creeping right back on.  It sounds like either the doctor did the diet herself or is rep for Medifast but either way based on her comments I agree that its time to find another doc!

    I agree with this!

Just 'cause they're a doc doesn't mean they know their ass from sound nutritional advice.

  • Wow. I can not believe any doctor would be promoting a program like that rather than healthy eating and exercise. Especially since you're already having success with what you're doing! That truly blows my mind.

Congratulations on your loss and the improvements you're making to your health. I'm glad you know that you are doing this right!

  • Wow, what a twatwaffle. Make me put so much faith in the medical community.

Kudos to you though for doing what's right for YOU and your body, and not listening to that shitsoaked hobobabble!

  • My doc also has a medifast poster handing in his patient rooms. However, he's never once mentioned it to me. He knows I eat paleo and has only been congratulatory about my weight loss success (35 lbs down and 25 to go). It does make me suspect that he recommends medifast to people who ask for his advice though. It makes me give him the side eye but I've ignored it thus far because he's an otherwise great doc (it just makes me happy I don't have to ask him for dietary advice).
