Salary on the app?

When you fill out an application, do you answer the salary desired and/or your previous salaries?

I went to an interview and the person acted annoyed that I didn't put either.  I prefer to answer this in the interview if they are interested enough to ask.  My field is small and too many people (esp "underlings") see the applications for me to feel comfortable listing this.

Re: Salary on the app?

  • Yes, I would have filled it in. It's about following directions. They were probably annoyed because you failed to answer all the questions and they were probably using salary requirements/history as a way to weed people out.

  • I did, when the app didn't say optional! I was applying for every job that my qualifications matched and did not want to get eliminated because of not answering a question!

  • I've put "open" or something like that before so the box wouldn't be blank. I've always heard putting a desired salary can only either have you eliminated for being too high, have them think you're not as qualified if its too low, or have them offer you less money than they would have if its lower than they had planned.
