Stupid Newbie Question-5K Race

I am a lurker on this board and soaking in the inspiration but I have a dumb question.  I am a soon to be C25K graduate (I have to finish Week 9, Days 2 & 3) My first 5k is in a little over a week.  What should I expect on race day?  My bib is getting mailed to me.  Do I just show up and run? Do I have to check in somewhere? How far in advance do you show up?  It's about 45 minutes from my house and starts at 8:30AM.  Any tips are appreciated.  Also what does it mean when it says it's a "certified course"?

TIA

Re: Stupid Newbie Question-5K Race

  • You pretty much just show up and run through your normal pre-running routine.  For a 5K I run ~ a mile warm up and hit the bathroom a couple of times.  I drink a lot of water the night before but not a lot the morning of the race.  Certified means that the distance is certified and could be use to qualify for another race your time from this race.
  • How big of a race is it?  If it's small (a few hundred) and I know parking will be easy, I like to get there around 30 minutes.  If it's big and I'm not sure about how hard parking will be, I like to be there at least an hour early.  I always get nervous on race day and it gives me time to get there and stretch and ease some nerves because I made it there with plenty of time to spare.  All I do for warm-ups is walking and stretching.

5Ks are fast.   Go to the back of the line and when the race starts do your best to pace yourself so you don't burn out.  The more you run, this won't be as big of a concern but since you just finished C25K you just want to aim for finishing your race at your pace.

Most importantly, have fun.  Good luck!

  • If you have your bib already you just need to get there and warm up, pee, and run.  The local races near me are usually pretty small (around 400 people?) so I get there about 30 minutes early to park, stretch, and pick up my bib.  I suck and do not do a warm up run, but maybe this time I will do some warm up running at home before I head over.  They go quickly, as someone mentioned, so just have fun and enjoy!  And at your first race (or hell, any of your races!) it is normal to be nervous.
  • Thanks for the tips! My bib came today and I'm getting so excited!
