Pandemonium (Spoilers!)

If you haven't read it, close this post NOW!

Really, close this post. Trust me, you don't want to be spoiled (I say this as someone who almost always reads spoilers Smile).

Spoilers starting!

So, how did you like it? I started the book on Saturday afternoon and read sporadically, finishing last night. I actually am the opposite of what I saw on Goodreads, and liked Delirium better. I think I'd give Pandemonium just under 4 stars, but more than 3.5. I liked it, but it was pretty predictable. I knew Alex wasn't dead and I knew Lena would fall for Julian as soon as he was introduced. I also figured that we would see Lena's mom at some point. Last, I just knew that the kidnapping was some kind of setup. It just felt like something Raven and Tack would do. Even with the predictability, I liked the way the story went.

I also think what really makes it good for me is that now I'm really anxious for the third book. I want to see Lena's mom again (she has to come around, right?) and I want to know what happens with Lena and the boys. Love triangle? Will Alex be mad? Will she have to choose, or will the choice be made for her (one of the boys dies)? Will there be a full on revolution (likely)? How will that happen with so many people living like zombies now that they are cured? Any predictions?

Let's also discuss who you like better - Alex or Julian. I never became attached to Julian, so I'm siding with Alex, but will have to see what he is like in the next book. We didn't get to see much of him and I couldn't tell if his line of not believing Lena (about always loving Julian) was said in anger (he wants nothing to do with her) or love (he is going to fight for her).

Do not read my original post. I saw in Amber's post that you are 70% finished, so what I posted is pretty much what you have left to read. I can't wait to discuss it, though! How are you liking it so far?

  • It took me a little while to get into it but once they went to the rally and after that I really started getting into it.  I'm at the part where they have exited the subway system and are at the homestead but haven't gone in yet.  Not sure if it's a trap yet.  I think the "then" part is where they finally made it to the last camp after they were attacked.  No clue who lived yet aside from Raven, Lena, the one they had go into the cave and the two guys.

This series hasn't gripped me like HG did but I definitely like it.

  • Jo, I'm with you! I liked Delirium better, but Pandemonium was still good! You predicted a lot more about the book than I did though. I didn't anticipate the kidnapping being planned.

I thought the underground community people were interesting. If we lived in this world, would you go through with the procedure or would you be an invalid? Where would you decide to live -- Homesteads or tunnels?

ALSO, on that note... how old were you when you first fall in love? Would you have been like Lena and attempted to escape? Who do you think Lena will end up with ??

Okay, another also. HOW is Lauren Oliver going to wrap this up in one more book? I don't think it will be enough :)

Okay, answering my own questions :)

If we lived in this world, would you go through with the procedure or would you be an invalid? Where would you decide to live -- Homesteads or tunnels?  YES I would be an invalid. Absolutely. I'm not sure where I would prefer to live. I think the homesteads would be rough, but to be in the tunnels would be so dirty and claustrophobic, and to live on leftovers from the landfill??? At least the homesteaders get shipments from sympathizers and they hunt for food. I guess I would choose homestead.

ALSO, on that note... how old were you when you first fall in love? Would you have been like Lena and attempted to escape? Who do you think Lena will end up with ??

I was 15 when I was infected (haha, I had to). DH and I met a year after my high school boyfriend and I broke up (so I guess technically DH was a high school boyfriend too, but he was 19 and I was almost 17 when we met and started dating so I don't really count it since I was the only one in high school). I was soo head over heels for my highschool boyfriend and I definitely would have done anything to avoid the cure. In retrospect I laugh over our relationship, even though we dated for about a year. What I have with DH is of course so much better and so much different. It has almost been 10 years that DH and I have been together and I have loved every moment of it and how we have grown over the decade (ahh!).

I think Lena will end up with Julian actually. Alex was just her first love, but I think Lena and Julian rely on each other. Maybe I need to re-read Delirium (which I will do), but I think Julian.

Okay, another also. HOW is Lauren Oliver going to wrap this up in one more book? I don't think it will be enough :)

I thought the underground community people were interesting. If we lived in this world, would you go through with the procedure or would you be an invalid? Where would you decide to live -- Homesteads or tunnels? Honestly, if I grew up in that world, I probably would have chosen the procedure. Knowing what I know from growing up in our world, I would choose invalid (but mostly because I think they are going to "win" in the end).

ALSO, on that note... how old were you when you first fall in love? Would you have been like Lena and attempted to escape? Who do you think Lena will end up with ?? 16? My high school boyfriend and I were together 4.5 years from age 15-20. I doubt we would have "escaped" because we were both by the book types.

I hope Lena ends up with Alex because I really didn't feel her relationship with Julian. However, I think she'll end up with Julian because I think the author will have Alex being the one who showed her how to love, but Julian being her "true love". Maybe this is why I liked Delirium better? I just didn't like Julian as much. I was also kind of disappointed that Lena just assumed Alex died and moved on so quickly.

Okay, another also. HOW is Lauren Oliver going to wrap this up in one more book? I don't think it will be enough :) I'm afraid the last book will be rushed like the end of Mockingjay was for me. There needs to be some kind of revolution and also development of the love triangle. I'm hopeful she can do ti well, but not too optimistic.

  • I finally finished it!  I agree with you Jo that it was very predictable and I predicted everything you did.  I wasn't sure when her mom was going to show up but when Lena saw the # on the ladies neck when she was taken back to Raven & Tack's it flitted by in my mind that it was someone that had been locked up.  I didn't necessarily make the connection that it was her mom at that time though.  Everything else I pretty much knew was coming such as the setup.

I thought it was an OK book.  It took me a little bit to get into it but I started liking it when the rally started but then at the end I started not caring for it so much.  There was one part when they were in the hospital I think where I rolled my eyes because I was thinking, "Really oh how convenient, like that really would have happened."  I can't remember which part it was though!

I wondered what Alex meant when he said "Don't believe her".  I was thinking he said it out of anger but why?  She didn't want to leave him in Delirium.  He let her escape and gave himself up to save her.  Maybe he wsa pissed that she "left" him emotionally after she thought he was dead....?  I really don't know.  I wonder what the heck's going to happen now though.  What an awkward position Lena is in.

I prefer Alex to Julian.  I really can't say why though.  I think maybe it was because I connected with him more in Delirium than I did with Julian in Pandemonium.

Oh I thought it was freaking awesome that her mom is at the top-top!!  Woohoo!!

Where would you decide to live -- Homesteads or tunnels?  I would like to say I would be an invalid but if it was drilled into me that there was no such thing then I would have went with the procedure just as everyone else did.  Now if I came into contact with an invalid I would have been curious to see what their life was like on the outside then decide from there.

ALSO, on that note... how old were you when you first fall in love? Would you have been like Lena and attempted to escape? Who do you think Lena will end up with ??  I was 16.  Heck yea, I would have attempted to escape.  I attempted to escape my house which was very strict so I definitely would have attempted to escape the procedure.  I would prefer that she end up with Alex but I don't know.  She'll probably stay with Julian.  I think one of them will die in the next book.

Okay, another also. HOW is Lauren Oliver going to wrap this up in one more book? I don't think it will be enough :)  I wish the book was already out so I could find out.

  • I literally finished less than five minutes ago! I also liked Delirium better. I was pretty peeved for at least half of Pandemonium that Alex didn't escape with Lena. I kept waiting for Alex to reappear. I knew she would fall in love with Julian (which irritated me... she is what 18? She is falling in love with every young guy she meets.), and as soon as they said a man escaped from the crypts, I knew it would be Alex. I'm pretty sure I have a book-crush on him, which is why I was not for the Lena-Julian relationship (although I was still on edge hoping they would escape). I am really excited for the next one, although I don't know what I'll do if they "kill" off Alex again! haha

Pretty much how I felt, too. I knew he wouldn't be dead and I couldn't believe she just accepted it like she did. Especially after what happened with her mom.
