Trip to Ireland

I am going on a 10 day trip to Ireland (Galway) next week and am at a loss of what to pack.  Right now the temps are in the low 50s with rain and fog.  I was wondering, does anyone have any recommendations?  I want to be prepared but not overpack, which is something I tend to do.  TIA

Re: Trip to Ireland

  • The weather in Ireland is very, very changeable. It makes Scottish weather look easy! Layers. Lots of layers. I would bring various mix-and-match options - short sleeve top, long sleeve top, cardigan, scarf, waterproof jacket, scarf, umbrella and sunglasses - any of all of which might be needed at any time!

Agree. We were there in March and we had a couple sunny, 70 degree days followed by rainy and cold.

  • I was there in summer 2010. I mostly wore jeans, t-shirts/short-sleeve tops, and my favorite yoga jacket. I also wore capri pants and light cargo pants a few times. My sister wore a lot of summer dresses with a light jacket on top, and flip-flops (but she practically lives in summery clothes all year round).

I also got a ton of use out of my hooded windbreaker, since it rained pretty often. This was a light jacket, so IDK if you will need a heavier one (or sweaters) for current weather conditions.

Like PPs said, the weather varied a lot. A winter beanie hat might be a good thing to throw in your luggage, and a small travel umbrella.

  • Ditto the layers (at least one being waterproof) and a sunglasses.  When I went we lucked out with spectacular weather (didn't rain once the entire two weeks we were there) but there were places we went and things we did where the temperatures would shift from cool to cooler and warm to cooler, and in certain places along the coasts (like the Cliffs of Moher, and in Dingle when we took a boat ride to see Fungie) it was windy and I was glad to have a hat.  I brought both a brimmed conductor hat and a knit beanie, and I used them both, but the brimmed hat was more useful.

I didn't bring an umbrella.  I live outside of Seattle and figured the weather would be similar enough that I would find an umbrella cumbersome and annoying, and not useful.  Even though it didn't rain on us I stand by my opinion.  :)

  • I agree with everyone - layers for sure! My husband and I brought waterproof jackets with removable liners; they worked really well! An umbrella probably wouldn't have been very useful in Ireland, since most of the precipitation is drizzly mist :) We also brought waterproof sneakers, since we were outdoors a lot. I'm sure they made us look like tourists, but they saved out feet after all of the trekking outdoors!

Have lots of fun! We stayed in Galway for three nights when we visited Ireland (as a base for visiting Inishmore and Connemara). You will have a blast :) I recommend the Galway Tart Company for dinnner - my husband and I loved it! http://www.gourmettartco.com/index.php

  • Everyone's pretty much covered what to bring but let me just add it's going to be colder than you think!  I went with a group of friends (all from N. Dakota so we're used to cold).  It was "40" ~ or so they claim! & rainy while we were there.  I felt like I could never warm up b/c of the damp cool air.  Many Coffee & Bailey?s seemed to help some though :)

Have fun!  I loved Ireland, so pretty!

  • We were just there 3 weeks ago.  The weather was in the mid 40s but like everywhere gets colder at night.  Galway is on the west coast; the winds off the ocean can be brutal.

We did layers.  I always pack the dreaded pantyhose, just for extra warmth if needed.

Bring warm socks.  Almost every young woman I saw was wearing boots .

Pack one big warm sweater than you can wear with multiple outfits.

I brought gloves b/c if my hands are warm, I'm warmer.
