Outer Banks, NC

We are thinking about taking a trip to the Outer Banks, NC the end of July and have never been. There will be 6 adults and 2 kids (18 months and 2 months).

Any suggestions on where to stay (we are looking at rental homes and I think our budget is around $3000 for the week for lodging), what to do, etc?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Re: Outer Banks, NC

  • DH and I went a couple of years ago in September and stayed in Kill Devil Hills.  It's pretty central.  He was quite interested in going to the Wright Brothers Museum and we loved Jockey's Ridge State Park - dunes at sunset were beautiful.

There is also a main drag with lots of shopping, tee shirt shops, restaurant options (lots of chains) plus mini golf.

We also went North to Corolla to do some kayaking and see the wild horses which was amazing.  This was a much more laid back kind of town.

Duck Donuts are a must...they make your donut to order and you can watch it go through the whole conveyor belt process.

  • We went with some friends a few years ago and stayed in Corolla, right by the wild horse beach that PP mentioned (although we never saw any horses, figures). Duck was pretty close and seemed to have most of the shopping and eating options.

Our friends had a great time, since all they wanted to do was relax in the pool or on the beach. MH and I prefer to explore and sightsee on our vacations, so within a few days we were pretty bored. We took a day trip to the Wright Brothers site and the outlet shopping in Kill Devil Hills (I think?) and that was neat.

IMO it wasn't worth it ... but we also had an eight-hour drive from New Jersey. If you're closer and/or enjoy just being on the beach, then you'll have a good time. The beach was lovely, very clean and not crowded.

  • I have this place bookmarked because a friend has stayed there and loved it. Quiet street, just across from the beach, and not super-expensive.

    Hi:

To me, the appeal of OBX is that there isn't much to do.  It is definetely a relax at the pool and beach kind of place.  We have rented from Twiddy and Carolina Designs and have had great houses from each.  Be sure to rent one with a pool.  The ocean is frequently too rough to go in, even in July.  Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills are closer to the "action"- mini golf and restaurants.  We like to stay further north in Duck and Corolla.  We rent an ocean front or a block or so back house and rarely leave.  We hang out at the pool and beach and our group is a bunch of foodies who like to cook and bring more wine than food, so it suits us.  There isn't a whole lot to explore without driving long distances, and there are limited golfing options, so it depends on what you want from vacation, as to whether it would be a good choice or not.

  • We love the outer banks.  It is so nice to relax and distance yourself from the rest of the world.   We have stayed in Duck and Coralla.  IMO Duck is better.  We always rent from Twiddy and usually have a pool and walking distance to the stores.
