Where would you go in May?

I'm starting to brainstorm a vacation in May.   We have 1 week, ~ $2000 for 2 people, leaving from Atlanta.  We're open to all kinds of vacations -- backpacking, big cities, beaches, scuba diving, .... nothing is off the table.  Where would you go?  Thanks for any ideas!

Re: Where would you go in May?

  • We're going to Cabo at the end of May!  I'm super excited and can't wait to go!

    Some other ideas:

    Jamaica, California, Niagra Falls....

    Anniversary

  • we are going on a southern caribbean cruise in May and are spending a little more than that.

  • We usually go to Mexico in May- Playa del Carmen and Tulum
  • Where have you traveled to previously?

With your parameters, here are a few suggestions. I am not sure if all of these would be doable with your budget; a lot would be dependent on the price of airfare you are able to secure.

Washington DC, Seattle/Portland or Seattle/Vancouver, Los Angeles/San Diego, San Francisco/Sonoma/Napa, Boston/Salem/Plymouth/Cape Cod, New York, Miami/Everglads/Key West, Santa Fe/Albuquerque, Sedona/Grand Canyon/Phoenix, National Parks of Utah (Arches/Zion/Bryce/etc).

  • If you are daring wait and book a last minute trip to get the cheapest airfare. Atlanta is such a bustling place and you might be able to get even better deals since Southwest just started to fly out of Atlanta.

I would probably go west to Seattle, or San Francisco.

  • We're going to Seneca Rocks, WV in May!  We are not backpacking though.  We are renting out a cabin and taking day trips for hiking, rock-climbing, and kayaking.

  • I've been itching to do a trip to the Southern coast of Maine.  It's so pretty, but it would probably be hard to do on $2k.  I love Miami, and flights from Atl are pretty cheap.  I've had really good luck with Priceline in the Miami area, although we're willing to stay in Coral Gables.  It's a really nice vacation that isn't too expensive.  You could do a Mexico all inclusive or a cruise with that budget.  If you are willing to stay closer, you could do a really nice Asheville trip on $2k since you can drive.  If you haven't been to Asheville, seriously consider it.
  • If I lived in Atlanta I would try to go somewhere in the Caribbean/Central America in May. That's when hotels start dropping their rates for the low season.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

We spent a week in Portland Maine a few years back and loved it.  It is such a cute town with cobblestone streets and amazing restaurants and bakeries in the alley. You can rent bikes and ride all over town. We stayed in a condo on Casco Bay and took day trips to areas like Kennebunkport and Boston.

  • For scuba I would highly suggest Roatan, Honduras on that budget. Hotels are only $60 a night and diving is only $30 a tank. if you can get a good deal on flights, you should be able to stay in budget.  Let me know if you want recomendations.

  • Thanks for all these fantastic ideas!!  I'll come back with more specific questions after we've done some research.  Thanks again!
