Google Phone - (arborgold & BK)

What is this you speak of? Do tell...

Re: Google Phone - (arborgold & BK)

  • arborgold told me about it so she can fill you in on more details but basically you can get a free phone number that you can give out and will ring to whatever number you want.  It's a way to give people your number without really giving it to them.  It defaults to not allowing text messages and you can block numbers. I'm pretty sure you can even decline calls because people have to say their name before they are put through to your number.  It seems really cool.  I just signed up for a number last night so I haven't really had a chance to play around with it much.  I just got a new phone number though and it's been awesome to not have random guys I talked to 6 months ago texting me all day long.
  • Google voice is a nifty "new" google feature that allows you to have ONE phone # that.

The niftiest part for me (before I started dating again and switched to using a google voice # as my handout #) was the fact that all of my voicemails would be transcribed for me. Meaning if someone called my phone and left a voicemail, I could either choose to listen to it (which i hate) or I could just open up my email and see it transcribed to me in an email - SCORE!

You can either use it with your real #, or you can get a google voice #. Right now I use a "fake" googlevoice number that I signed up for, and just have all of those calls going directly to to my gchat account as transcribed calls so that I'm not handing out my real phone number to creepers who can be all stalky mcgee and call and text constantly.

    Actually - ALERT ALERT ALERT!

I just discovered something new and nifty! It looks like I can go back to my "real" # and hand that out. Because googlevoice is now offering a new "spam filter" service to block unwanted calls and texts. SCORE!

I was jealous of you ladies as I too wanted to have a non direct phone number to give out. This might actually work for me too.  (In case some of you don't know, I am deaf and use the video phone)  A transcribed message in an email would really work.

  • I just signed up!  Thanks for the tips!

  • Just a heads up ladies (and gents?)

You can only have ONE phone # going through google voice going to your phone. So you can either get a google voice #, and use the nifty transcribe features and all that jazz with your fake # on your phone, OR you can get google voice, not get a #, and just use your regular phone # with your phone and all of the nifty transcribe / block / straight to text or email features.

But, again, you have to choose. Only one # can be used with google voice on your phone.

FWIW, I think, given my new awareness of the blocking texts and calls feature, I'm going to switch back to using my "real" phone # with googlevoice features. I miss havnig calls from friends and family being transcribed for me... As long as I can block creepers from calling / texting, I'm fine with giving out the # (especially since it's an Ohio cell phone #, and I live in VA - mwahaha Wink).

  • Also something you can do with it is if you give out that number to people you may not want to talk to all the time, you can turn on "do not disturb" and if they dial that number it will go straight to voicemail - but people who have your real number can still get through.
  • Sounds great, Ive got to sign-up!

How do you do this?  That loser is the only one I gave my number to and I can't block him bc I don't know his number.  I'd rather just put it on DND
