Moms, talk to me abt BLW

My neighbor just loaned me the book.

Considering I hated the fill in pedi yesterday I didn't even bother to bring it up with him after he told me that "six months is best for breastfeeding, 12 months is nice if you can do it, but anything after that is more for you than the baby".

Re: Moms, talk to me abt BLW

  • Sorry, didn't finish my thought.

Tell my why you did this/why not?

    Benefits?

    Drawbacks?

    Did your pedi support it?

  • I think we are going to do a semi-BLW approach. We'll see what happens. I have not discussed it with the pedi. He cleared her for solids at 4mo which she was so not ready for. I will fill him in on how it goes at our 6mo appt.

I plan to start her on some oatmeal tomorrow but we've been letting her suck on and play with some fruits/ veggies over the last week to see what she thinks.

I'll let you know as it goes!

    Sorry, didn't finish my thought.

Tell my why you did this/why not?  We did a modified version and probably will again with LO #2.  We did feed purees (all homemade) when she turned 6 mo, but M soon refused to be spoonfed- probably around 8 mo.  She's very independent and wanted to self feed, so we switched to more of a BLW approach.  I read the book and was kind of doing a lot of the things suggested already, but we did still feed purees as well if/when she let us.  I never gave her cereal (rice) and she hated oatmeal.  Her first foods were avocado, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatos and then we started fruits.  I didn't add meats in until 8 mo.

Benefits? She got the chance to perfect her fine motor skills through self feeding, she learned what sized bites she could take on her own so she wouldn't choke, and she got to test various textures of foods and determine her own tastes/dislikes

Drawbacks? It can be quite messy and it takes them a long time to eat some meals.

Did your pedi support it?   Yes. 100%

  • We started with avocado shortly after their 6 mo appointment. Quinn promptly sucked off a big piece and puked up a bottle of milk, which totally freaked me out. We've been doing cereal and homemade purees (the money savings is minimal, but I like knowing exactly how its made, plus I am using milk to thin instead of water in an attempt to get a few extra calories in plump them up a little bit before they're mobile since they're both at/under 3% weight-for-length. They'd been more like 3 and 5%, and the pedi was not super pleased with the drop off between 4 and 6 mo).

I never intended to do cereal (we do oatmeal and brown rice) but our pedi really wanted us to since they were early and most iron absorption is in [edited] 3rd tri (and they were both kind of jaundice at birth. Quinn was under the lights for a few days). Its worked out to be a good thing because they wont take more than a bite of a new food without it. Its been taking us like 3 days to get new things in cereal free. Avery especially just clamps her mouth shut. Its funny.

We're working our way through the 6-8 mo foods (on wholesomebabyfoods, though i don't know if I'll ever get around to mangos, etc, unless I buy packaged food since I don't like them). I think next month we'll probably start more finger food/BLW style feeding since they'll be "able" to eat a lot more plus should be developing their pincher grasp by then. Their hand coordination has improved a lot recently and their LOVVVVE to play with their spoons.

I am going to make them more sweet potatoes this weekend, so we MIGHT give them some slices to play with.  I honestly have no idea what our pedi thinks about BLW. I didn't ask. She's pretty laid back, so I don't know that she'd have an opinion. The only thing she said is she wants them on 3 meals/day by 8 months.

  • I don?t know that we are specifically going for the BLW, moreso, I have been BF for 4+ months and hope to make it 1 year.  Anything after that, bonus!

In the meantime, our Dr cleared us to start solids.  She said to start with the cereal ? I really didn?t want to do this, but her explanation did make sense.  She said to try the cereal and see if he can move the food from the front of his mouth to the back.  If he can, he?s ready for solids and go right to the fruits and veggies, if not, try again next week with the cereal.  She said it?s better to do this with cereal than to ?waste? the $ foods you buy or the ones you spend your afternoons making.  It?s a valid point.  Plus I literally have 20 boxes of cereal that people have bought for us or passed on to us.  If I go through a half a box or box while he?s learning, that?s fine with me!

We tried the cereal twice last week and while he did a pretty good job, you could tell he needs a little more practice.  We are going to try again tonight J

I am looking forward to him eating more solids because as much as I BF him and pump, my supply has never been the same since I got sick early January.  So I don?t plan on cutting any nursing / pumping sessions with the solids until he?s ready.

  • Also, the pedi really wants us to give them meat - to be honest I didn't really ask why, she said something about the nutrients/protein, but they were melting down from the shots+bedtime - so we'll probably do chicken soon. I'm going to buy one to see what pureed chicken looks like since I'm not comfortable handing them stringy meat yet. I'm hoping to ditch the baby cereal by the time they're doing finger foods too.

Not to thread jack, but Jules, we're counting the days until they're eating enough solids to cut back on milk a bit (no time soon it looks like). C's lost about 15% of her supply in the last 2 months, and we're peeling through her freezer stash at about 10 bags/week. She's pretty stressed out about it as she really wanted to hit a year. I have NO IDEA at what point kids cut back though, or begin eating enough to drink less.

Ugh, I feel the stress!  I had about 90oz in my freezer stash and was adding 4oz a day until I got sick.  I've been pretty good about keeping up with his daily needs, but haven't been adding to the stash.  I have also used about 20oz of it.  We received 7 full sized cans of formula and have suplimented with some of that as well (about 6 complete days worth).

I'm with you though, I don't know at what point they are eating enough to cut back Huh?

I think it's a long time. My understanding is that food in the beginning (unil they're over a year or so) is more about learning how to eat than real nutritional value.

  • I think A is a ways off from solids, we will introduce closer to six months probably. She just doesn't seem interested yet. I think the thing that interests me about the BLW is the idea that baby learns how to eat...I feel like purees just kind of introduce flavors but it's almost liquid, it's not really learning how to eat real food, if that makes sense.

I know Paige is big on this, hoping she will chime in :-)

See Connor watches us like a hawk while were eating... as in doesn't break his stare.  I give him one of his spoons to play with and he mimics us by putting it in his mouth when we put ours in our mouths.

In regards to the liquid, our Dr suggested making the cereal thicker.  Then put it on his tongue in the front of his mouth and then if he can move it to the back of his mouth, that's when she said he is ready to eat solids.

  • I agree about the real food v tastes concept (hence why I really want to move in the BLW direction)

fwiw, The purees I have made are much thicker than the store bought ones. They eat them better than the runny ones. I did try banana the other day and ended up smashing a little water in...they werent swallowing the tiny chunks (hasnt been an issue with purees)
