Need opinions: buying a beach tent

I am thinking of buying this for our beach trip (to the dominican republic). We have a little one and we are all super white so I am just worried about the sun. I burn SO easy, I don't tan at all.

I am just worried it would blow away. WDYT?

  • We have the coleman version when we spend the day on the Cape, etc. DS is very fair and it is nice to have a place for him to hang out in the shade, eat, chance into real clothes (ours completely closes up), etc. Anyway we use tent stakes to keep it in place.

Just a thought, have you check with the hotel/place you are staying? They probably have plenty of umbrellas. I don't think I would take it on a trip that wasn't a car ride personally.

  • I think it probably depends where you are going in the DR... the north coast is very well known for being the kite surfing capital of the western hemisphere (or something like that) so the wind can be strong, the tent in the pic looks like it is good for shade, but I'm not sure how it is against flying sand.  I only stayed at one AI while living in the DR (and it was a basic one, so I'm no expert on high-class travel in the DR), but most beaches/resorts have umbrellas, chairs, and patios for shade.  Public beaches often have business men/women renting chairs and umbrellas--and they'll continue to move them to keep you in the shade all day (or for as long as you're renting the chair/umbrella). As PP suggested, I'd talk to your resort/travel agent and see what your resort has available for you to use.

  • We just bought this at Costco, but I haven't used it yet.  I can't imagine traveling with a tent, though.  What a pain.
