Raleigh NC - any suggestions

On the off chance that anyone lives in, or is familiar with the Raleigh area I am looking for some recs on places to eat, it can't be too fancy cause my 2 1/2 year old will be with us on this trip and our babysitter will not.  TIA

Re: Raleigh NC - any suggestions

  • Cafe Carolina- Panera-like setting and food choices, but also a bakery, with excellent sweet potato biscuits, good salads and panini.

Cook Out- definitely fast food (the locations I've been to are only drive-thru or have outdoor seeting only). The best millkshakes.

Q Shack- tomato-based barbecue. Also fast food and kid-friendly.

Firebirds- one location at the new mall in Durham, and I believe another in Raleigh. Sit-down, significantly fancier than the above.

Mama Dipps- home-cooked Southern food, casual atmosphere, in Chapel Hill.

I used to live in the Triangle, and these are the locations I try to hit when I head back to visit friends. All are relatively kid-friendly, although Firebirds is probably less so.

  • THANK YOU!  I absolutely HATE going out to eat to places unknown and getting crappy food.

  • Hey!  I live in the Triangle so I can help.

Cafe Carolina would definitely be a good option for lunch or breakfast and there are a number of locations in the area.

It would be helpful to know what area you're going to be in and whether you'll have a car as it's a good size place and I hate to give you suggestions that are super far from where you'll be.

If you're heading downtown, I'd recommend Gravy for Italian (it's nicer but I've definitely seen kids there and family kids have gone with us before with no issues).

We also like Tobacco Road, a sports bar downtown.  Try the sweet potato chips!  I've definitely seen kids here too.

Also anything in the Rocky Top Hospitality restaurant group would be good--there is Tribeca Tavern (locations in both Raleigh and Cary), Rockwell's (Cary), Draft (downtown Raleigh) or Twisted Fork (North Raleigh).

If you can give me more specifics on what kind of food you're interested in and where you'll be, I can give you additional recommendations.  I've been in the area since 1999.
