Interesting day today-- got a call from my old job back in the States. Very, very tentative, but an opening is coming up this summer.
In a way it's wonderful news (was nervous about having to try to find a job in this cr@ppy economy when we go back in late '13; my sister's sick and I'd be closer), but at the same time, I don't really feel "ready" to go. More things I'd like to see and do here (is there ever time to do "everything").
I think overall, the smart thing to do is to go for the certainty, but at the same time, I'll be sorry to go so early. Sigh-- we'll see... no definite offer yet... need to talk to the big boss next week.
So who wants to quit their job tomorrow and travel through Europe for the next 6ish months?!
!
Re: Should I stay or should I go...
Oh man, that sucks when you have to decide between two decent things!
The only advice I can give is to not lose too much sleep about it quite yet. Wait until you've met with the boss and heard more.
And what about asking them about a delay? Maybe they'd be willing to wait a bit longer?
Yeah, you're definitely right-- need to let things play out. And I do appreciate the opportunity, I really, really do. I've got no right to complain-- this 3yrs has been a wonderful time/chance. Cliche as it sounds, truly life changing.
If things do work out, I'll try to push for Sep/Oct return, but think they'll probably want July but be willing to wait 'til August, which is pretty square.
I agree with the others who say don't stress to much until you know if its a real offer that you would be interested in.
But also as someone who just moved back to the US this job market does stink. Luckily I was just offered my old job back that I left when we moved to England. I had been hunting for 4 months and had a total of 3 interviews included the one for my old job and no other offers. In this market that is nothing when I talk to other people but it was still frustrating. I start back to work tomorrow and while I'm grateful to be working again I'm not looking forward to my old commute.
I agree to try to wait until you get too stressed about the decision (yeah right, huh?).
In your situation, I would probably take the offer in the US because the job market there is bad and you do want to move back at some point. That's just me, though, and I am a bit of a security fanatic like that.
I also find that when I'm first presented with a big change, the idea makes me very uncomfortable. I don't feel ready.
But when it sets in a bit more, I get more comfortable with the idea and I feel better prepared. I start to be ok with the idea. It's mostly the initial shock and change of plans that shakes me up.
Maybe you'll find this as things move along. If you know you're leaving Italy, you'll use the time you have left as best you can, but you'll also start to get excited about moving back to the States and so on.
