WW vs. MyFitnessPal

Thoughts on which is better?  I currently am using MyFitnessPal and really like to see my workout calories added back in. I eat a pretty healthy gluten free diet ( I am gluten intolerant, not following a fad), but tend to even overeat the good stuff.  I need something to keep me accountable for what goes in my mouth.

My mother and sister are both die-hard Weight Watcher lovers and try to convince me to join every so often.

I was just curious to see the groups thoughts on both.

 TIA.

Re: WW vs. MyFitnessPal

  • I'm using WW, my DH uses MFP.  I've been successful since September, and while he started in January, he's close on my heals. The advantage of WW to me is in the meetings.  It's not that I actually learn much in the meetings, but the once weekly weigh-in that "counts" and the friendships I've made there keep me accountable.

DH is doing just fine without that sort of accountability, though until recently, we were doing a bit of a % loss competition, so he'd report in to me, and I'd do the same with him.  That was a failed experiment for me though, so I wouldn't encourage you to do something similar with your SO.  I kinda got too much in my own head during that period.

So I think it comes down to your personality.  If you're doing well with MFP, save your money and stick with it.  If you're finding that you track inconsistently, cheat, or otherwise aren't seeing progress, you might want to try WW for a while.

    Good luck.

  • I really like the MyPlate feature on Livestrong.com.  It lets you put in the food and backs out calories for working out.  There are a lot of foods preloaded too.  Only downfall is there is no Andriod app.

  • I actually use both.

I use Weight Watchers for counting points and tracking food, mainly because I go to the meetings and the fact that someone weighs me in every week helps keep me accountable.

I use MFP because I have a group of about 30 friends on it. I use it to document my weight and to track exercise.

I find counting points easier than tracking calories.

  • I'm currently on WW and love it. I love the plan, I love my leader and the flexibility of it all. Also, the accountability is what keeps me from giving up. I've never tried MFP but in my opinion, WW is the way to go.

  • I just started WW online last week. I have about 25-30 lbs to lose.  I've tried MFP and also sparkpeople. My problem is in the portion sizes, not the exercise part. I have no idea on how much to eat (in a healthy way). So far, I really like WW. It seems very manageable and does not make me feel like I'm starving.  The points definitely help me judge what is good and what is not so good.  I feel like I'm back in the driver's seat vs. wondering why I'm not losing weight.
  • I'm down about 17 lbs on WW so far.  I've used both and I find that counting points makes me less anxious about what I'm putting in my mouth.  Calories make me nuts.   Points make me lose weight.  I have no clue why other than I'm mental.

  • I did WW online for a year and lost 35lbs then just hit a stopping point with it where it felt like I outgrew the program.  I'm using MFP now and like it a lot better, mainly because I can set it to meet my personal caloric goals, rather than the one size fits most approach WW uses.

WW is great, especially if you're able to go to meetings, but it's not the best fit for everyone.

  • Thanks so much for the input!    I'm signing up for a few more races this summer and think, I'll stick with MFP for now.   It seems to make a little more sense with the training I'll be doing.

I have about 8-10lbs I want to lose, and if this doesn't help get me there I'll join WW and try that instead.
