Nest Book Club
Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

WTF Nest?

Sorry, can't make it clicky on my phone, but TN is at it again.  They've started pinning pictures from the message boards an that's apparently okay because they credit the username?!?!  I'm about to go change my sig to some generic picture no one can link to me.  If it weren't for you ladies...

Re: WTF Nest?

  • I see where people would be annoyed with this, but in a way, we are using their message boards, and anything we post can be found via google. Yes there is a level of anonimity in using the boards, but we share as much as we would like to here and it can all be linked back to us one way or another. I think it is sh!tty of them to not pin the images from the original blog, and it is pretty much against Pinterest's TOS to practice in this way, but again, anything you post on here is considered their property and technically they can do what they want with it.

They make poor decisions all the time and don't communicate with the community. Its our choice to stay and use their service. They are in it for the business and to get traffic to this site.

  • This is a reminder to me that this is a public forum.  So many people read this stuff and it can be used in so many ways.

I don't generally put anything personal about myself on here, but thanks the reminder.  Hopefully The Nest will decide I have nothing of interest to say.

I agree.  Once we put something on The Nest, according to their terms of service, which we agree to by posting here, they have the right to reproduce or use it in any way they wish.

This exactly.  It's not just your local book club sponsoring a private forum.  It's heavily advertised and promoted.  It does give some of us the illusion of privacy, but in reality this is what they do.

I kind of think of it like a lot of those Facebook apps.  They can use your photos an information for anything they want.  I think the same rules apply here.  That doesn't mean I have to like though.

The recipe thing kind of sucks though.  It's such a weird, seemingly gray area.

I lurk over on What's Cooking and I remember seeing Bump Kathleen asking if everyone would be fine with linking their recipes on Pinterest and a lot of the ladies said that it would be great because it would bring traffic to their blogs. The crap thing is the way TN decided to follow-through with this. If they had explained that they really were not going to link to their blogs but to the message boards, I am sure no one would agree with it. I don't remember seeing this question on the Crafts board, but their projects have been linked in the same manner. I think having their stuff shared within TN, TB and TK sites is one thing but to put it out on a third part site is another issue altogether.

ETA: I was wrong about the Pinterest thing. Bump Kathleen had actually asked for their twitter info so that TN could tweet about their recipes. Pinterest wasn't even brought up to anyone on the boards as far as I know.

With this, though, I hope no one hear decides to high-tail it out of here. I love our community and I don't want to lose you amazing ladies over this.

  • I deleted my previous comment because I hadn't seen that TN had consulted some of the members before starting this practice (though it seems that they didn't clearly explain exactly what they were planning to do).

We all voluntarily choose to be here and haven't jumped ship yet, but only Facebook can plow blithely on with utter disregard for its members' opinions and privacy. Other sites will find people eventually saying "enough is enough" and going somewhere that is more sensitive to its users' preferences and privacy concerns. Still, I agree that this is a good reminder that these cozy boards that can seem like a closed community are actually sitting out there for anyone to find and read.

  • I get that it's their right, but I'm fed up with this shady business they keep trying to pull. Why was only WC informed? I'm aware that that's where they're taking pictures from, but it affects all of us. Additionally, they're walking a fine line about what's theirs v their users. Again, it's their right, but is it really wise use your users' work for your gain when they're the ones frequenting your website?  What they're doing is also very against the TOS for Pinterest.

Additionally, I'm curious as to why this is any different than the pinit and fB buttons people were up in arms about last week.  Our users won't pin it, so we'll do it for them, but let them think that it's not being used?  It's the lies that are getting to me here.  Be up front about what you're doing with this information, rather than trying to explain yourself after the fact.  Many people here could have made themselves more anonymous had they known.

I mis-remembered the WC thing....Bump Kathleen was actually asking for their twitter info so that TN could tweet their recipes. I apologize for my crap memory.

The lack of commuication really get under my skin too, and I really wish they would get a clue. A user focus group would be a great solution to this, but I just don't think they're interested.

To me, this isn't different from the fb/twitter links they had last week. I really don't want to mix my nest life with my fb life, pinterest life, etc, unless I choose to do so. They need to not make that choice for their users, and that is what the big issue is. Just because we use their site doesn't mean that they should force this on us.

I personally think it's ridiculous that the only way to change your screenname (last time I checked, anyway) is to sign up for a new account with a different email address. A lot of girls signed up with an account on TK just to bookmark cake photos and checklists and didn't put a whole lot of thought into keeping their username anonymous. They didn't plan to be using that handle for years on national message boards, but they stumbled onto a board that they liked and then didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a totally new account and losing all of their saved stuff or their poster level.

  • I just used my Pin It button on my computer to see what comes up.  Any image (other than avatars) including wedding and children's pictures is available to be pinned.

People might reconsider keeping those in their signature boxes.
