Thyroid medication for hypo and losing weight

So I posted the other day about tracking my weight daily. Three (ish) weeks ago I weighed in at 157 at the doctor's office. Day one I weighed in at 153, then the past 3 it's been 150. I know scales can differ at home from the dr.'s office etc. But could I have really lost that much weight in 3 weeks? I work out 5-6 days a week, run, bike, swim. I find that to be a big loss in such a short time. I'm tracking food choices but not calories.

I was talking with my mom and she (of course she is super sweet and trying to make me feel ok about how much I weigh) was saying of course it's possible if my metabolism was screwed up and now it's getting back on track that it's possible to lose that much.

Does the medication make a difference in weight loss? What say you H&F?

Re: Thyroid medication for hypo and losing weight

  • Is is possible that the medicine gave you more energy for your workouts so you burned more in the workouts?

Either way, I'm interested to hear what others says. I'm retesting my levels, to decide if I will go on the medicine. I'm always so tired...

  • When I was first diagnosed and went on meds that happened to me. Went from  150 to 140 in just about 4 weeks. Scared me but I guess it was just my body adjusting itself.
  • I think it is possible. When I switched back to levo after I was on a compound, I saw some weight loss. The compound wasnt doing much for me as far as tiredness levels go, so I went back to the generic of synthroid.

That and a high protein, low or no grain diet has been my key.

  • Sigh. I think I need an endocrinologist. My PCP is treating me for hypo and I can't seem to lose a damn lb! It's so frustrating. I work out 5x a week for an hour each, intense workouts to!

Congrats on the weight loss :)

  • Its possible.  16 yrs ago I gained 30lbs in less then 2 months b/c of my thyroid - after being diagnosed, and starting meds, I lost the weight pretty quickly.  I think its was almost like a shock to my system from the meds which caused the lose (just like the shock of off levels causing sudden weight gain).

I now have the problem of the weight not coming off.  My levels are all screwy right now for some reason so I am guessing its attributed to that. Its frustrating though!
  • I didn't lose any weight when I started meds or as a result of dose changes but it's definitely possible.  Hypothyrodism can slow your metabolism, but I'm not sure how much affect the meds have in speeding it back up.  Have you been more active?   Maybe you are burning more calories now.  Also, being hypo can make you prone to retaining water.   Whatever the reason, congrats on feeling better and losing a few pounds!
