So, I signed up for my first marathon. I know that there are a myriad of training plans out there that I could pick and pray that they work for me. However, you ladies have a lot of expertise, and I thought if you would be willing to offer some insight (or are extremely bored) it would help a lot.
Here's where I am: I've run a few 5ks off and on over the years, nothing serious. After my first Peachtree RR last year (10k), not much training due to injury prior- 1:13 finish, I decided to train for a Half Marathon. I chose the Myrtle Beach Half last October and trained, not nearly as well as I would have liked, and missed quite a few runs, but finished in 2:30. Then I caught the REAL running bug.
Since I have finished a 5k in 28m, and 10k in 1:03 and started running with a running group 2-3x a week. I can pretty easily hold a 9:30-9:45 pace for about 4 miles and then I start falling off.
I'd like to get faster. (obvi). I know I can. I just feel I need the right training plan, but I don't know what that is. I want to be able to finish the MCM in a decent time and finish the Peachtree RR this year (10k) July 4th in under an hour. Those are the only two races I have on the books right now, and my main two goals.
So what should I do? I feel like it's too early to focus on Marathon training but I don't want to loose my base. Help a sista out!
TIA!

you might want to look into doing some shorter races this spring. also, hal higdon has some 'spring training' programs that are good for building your base and speed.
I'm running the MCM as well. I have yet to complete my first half, but will be doing so next weekend.
I'm planning on using this Hal Higdon Spring Intermediate training plan to improve my speed and prep me for Marathon training.

3/17/2012 DC RNR Half Marathon
4/22/2012 10M Parkway Classic

Ditto Hal Hidgon's plans. I have liked all of the HH plans I've used. I won't start officially training for MCM til the end of June.
I would build/maintain your base, work on speed, run the 10K (and work it into your marathon training if it falls into the period where you are training), and then focus on distance in training for the marathon.

I used the Runners world beginner plan - http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--6946-2-3X5X7-4,00.html
It worked so well for my first marathon that I'm using it again.
Thank you so much for the advice ladies! I had honestly never heard of the FIRST plan- great suggestion. I am going to look more into it- any recommendations of good websites or books?
I feel like this might work best for me and my work schedule seeing as it can get kind of crazy sometimes.
