Southern Recommendations

My husband and I are thinking about where to go for our anniversary in October. We have a baby who will be a year old then so there is a few criteria.

1) Around 6 hour drive from Atlanta (where we live).

2) Toddler friendly.

3) Not too expensive.

I would like to go somewhere new so no Savannah, Charleston, Gatlinburg. Asheville. Thanks for any ideas you have!

I heart Ben!!

Re: Southern Recommendations

  • Asheville is my favorite :)  How long is the trip?  If a long weekend, you could just do North Georgia.  It will be pretty in October and there are quite a few wineries you could visit. There are also some fun farms with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, etc. What about Memphis?  Really, the places you listed are the major places within driving distance that aren't beach destinations, and I don't know if you would want to do a beach vacation in October.  If you don't mind not being able to swim, St. Augustine is really nice.  There is also Amelia Island, FL.  You could probably get some pretty good deals in beach locations that time of year.  Highlands, NC is another option.  There's a pretty cool place right outside of Highlands called High Hampton.  It sort of reminds me of the place in Dirty Dancing.  Their rates include meals in their dining room.  You could do Chattanooga and see Rock City and Ruby Falls.  I don't think you could fill up more than a long weekend there, though.  I'll let you know if I think of any other ideas!

  • How about Destin, FL?  I believe it's a five hour drive when we used to live in Atlanta.  You can get a condo, it's toddler friendly.  And since you are driving if a hurricane is coming you can take off easily!!!  We've also gone to Jacksonville and St. Augustine Florida which I believe are 5-6 hours from Atlanta.
  • Here is a link to High Hampton.  It's in Cashiers, NC, not far from Highlands.  It's not a fancy place, but it's a very pretty property.  A law firm I used to work at does a retreat there every year, and everyone really enjoys it.

  • Nashville is 4 hours away.  What about the Georgia barrier islands?  I know some are expensive, but I don't think they all are.

  • We went to a wedding in St Simons Island and LOVED it.  DD#1 was just under a year.  We had a hotel near the beach.  It was a lovely little beach town, had such a great time!
  • Chattanooga is not far and also a nice small city - aquarium, Chattanooga Choo Choo.  I don't usually recommend Charlotte, NC where I live because I get bored here, but if you haven't been here it is also a nice smaller city with a kids museum Discovery Place, NASCAR Hall of Fame, Whitewater Center.
  • Keep the suggestions coming ladies. I appreciate it!

My husband and I are from TN so Memphis, Nashville, and Chattanooga have already been done.

We have a house in Destin and live in Atlanta and it is, at a minimum, 6 hours, and that is without stops. If you have a 1 year old with you it would more likely take 7 hours.

Hilton Head, Charlotte, New Orleans (a little longer than 6 hours)

  • We went once and it was 6 years ago.  I thought it was under 6 but I must be wrong!  sorry.
