UK Ladies: Is Freeview "Enough"? And what about BT for internet?
Rant: I am so unbelievable exhausted/frustrated from dealing with Virgin (data loss leading to Vonage connection not working meaning that I CAN'T WORK!!!).
So I'm looking into new service. You would think this is easy, but I can't even find out WTF Freeview is because the page won't open. Ahhhhh!!!
So, two questions:
1 - Does Freeview offer good channels/programming? HD?
2 - Would you recommend BT for internet, phone, and tv?
Thank you!
Re: UK Ladies: Is Freeview "Enough"? And what about BT for internet?
1. We have Freeview and are absolutely happy wiht it. We do have Freeview Plus (so can record), but are happy with the range of channels. I could see it being limiting though if you watch a lot of tv, or want the channels that have US programmes - more than E4 and the range of 5.
Freeview has the main channels: all the BBCs (including news, kids, etc), all the ITVs and 4 channels (including Film 4, and More 4), all the 5s, E4, Dave (!), some food channel, Really and some random channel (for my trash tv fix) - generally a good selection. I could do with more sometimes, but I can't stomach the cost.
2. We have BT for internet and phone and have seldom had problems with either. Only occasional problems with speed (usually the 8-10pm hours which are busy everywhere).
I've been happy with Freeview. The exact channels you can pull out of the air depends on your location and transmitters in your area, but there should be pretty good coverage now that the whole country has gone to digital transmission.
I've heard no complaints about BT internet, but again the speed DOES depend on your location. To my knowledge BT owns all of the internet lines, so even if you pay Virgin or Sky or whoever, they are just leasing the service from BT (same as with telephone service from other providers). So if your Virgin internet is super-slow, chances are BT won't be any better. However, it's worth calling them with your post code to see what they can offer you.
Thanks! I was going through the sign up online, and it asked whether I want an aerial installed for reception... Do I need this? We'll be on the lower ground floor so I don't even know where this would go. Our new flat is in central London (S. Ken. area) so is an aerial necessary?
I hate BT with a massive passion. We moved up one flight of stairs and it took them TWO MONTHS to transfer our service (phone). They provided completely terrible customer service through the whole thing, and no one seemed to care in the least. In the end, they had 'switched' our service from our downstairs flat to....our downstairs flat (aka did nothing). Why did it take two months to sort out that they never did the work? Ridiculous.
We have BE for internet and they've been great so far. ETA: We had o2 broadband for 14 months when we first lived in the UK and I still think o2 has the best customer service of any UK company I've worked with to date.
Does your building already have an aerial? Do you have a TV jack that uses this already?

It took us a good 8 weeks to get BT internet set up in Edinburgh. A guy had to come to our place and do 5 minutes worth of work. 8 fricking weeks.
The service was pretty meh, but I imagine that's all internet connects in the UK.
Sigh.
I have the worst luck with service providers, so your horror stories are getting to me
I just want the internet fairy to swoop down on our flat and drop off reliable service the day we move... Too much to ask, hahaha?
A friend is talking up O2. And I'm looking at Sky as well. Any experiences with them?
Like I said above, I had o2 for 14 months and loved them. Best customer service in the UK. Highly recommend both them and BE.
We had Sky for about 12 months in a different flat. They were also good, but when we tried to transfer our service, and ultimately they told us that they couldn't be our service provider--yeah, they refused our business. It was a little strange.
When you had o2, what did you do for television?
If you could choose between Sky for internet and tv or o2 for internet and ?? for tv, what would you choose?
Question open to everyone
we have Virgin tv, internet and phone.
Virgin is the best if you live in a cabled area- they don't share those with bt and are consistently found to have the fastest. We have no slow times. Many places in central london don't have fibre optic though so if you're relying on internet through the phone lines (which bt do own all of) provider doesn't matter as much.
