my dad - wow

backstory - my sister and her partner went through artificial insemination and are expecting a baby boy in june. the egg was her partner's (she is carrying) and the sperm was a donors.

i emailed my dad, who lives in costa rica and has come back once in 10 years, to see what he thinks about becoming a grandfather. he said "As far as being a grandfather, I am happy for (sister's name).  As I see it, there is no family connection, but since I like children and he will be a great joy to her, I think it is fine."

wow. i remember when it dawned on me that oh, the baby will have no chance of looking like me (yes, as an aunt i was thinking totally of myself - haha!). but i never thought he would be less than because he's not blood related. he is still a new member of the family.

my dad never ceases to amaze.

Re: my dad - wow

  • and in related news, my sister and her partner became domestic partners today and my sister's wife took my sister's last name (my maiden name). i told my dad well if it's any solace the baby will carry on your name (and he's a male, so he really will). obviously if frank and i have blood children they will not have my dad's name.

  • Maybe he'll feel differently when (if?) he actually meets the baby. Cnograts to your sister and her partner on becoming domestic partners today! That's awesome!

  • Congrats to them!  I guess I wouldn't have even thought about the baby not being blood related.  Maybe he'll come around once he's born.
  • Congrats to them and wow, a child with his last name isn't really related?!? geez dad!

  • Congrats to them!  Such excited things happening in their lives right now...you and I have already discussed this but hopefully he will come around once the baby is born, but if he doesn't at least your sister has you and your mom who are very excited!

  • congrats to them!  Party!!!  That is so exciting for your family.

And  your dad, I wouldn't even give him a second thought.  If he's not excited to be a granpa then bah-humbugg to him. I'm not sure of his & your sister's relationship, but i wouldn't even mention his remarks to her or her spouse.  It doesn't sound like he has anything positive to add anyway.

Focus on the happy ~ you're gonna be Auntie Eden!!!  Stick out tongue

  • Congratulations to your sister! Don't let his negative attitude get your family down about something this exciting. Like people said, maybe he'll change his mind once the baby is here.
  • Congrats to your sister!! I would have to ask him if he'd feel the same way if you and your H were pursing an adoption???

    I agree with Shmoozer...

  • thanks for all the congrats. no, i have no plans to tell my sister. i wouldn't want to hurt her. in one way i can understand where he is coming from. he will have no relationship with the child because he lives so far away and never visits. if that's the kind of grandfather he would be, then i guess that's no grandfather at all.
