Vacation Recs NE?

After waffling for a few weeks about where to go for my birthday in May, I think I want to head to the East Coast. I'm not very familiar with any area other than farther NE- Portland, ME area.

Any ideas or recs farther south?  I don't really care how far- I'm totally going blind on this.  Our budget is probably moderate- not luxury, but more enjoyment focused than budget.

We love being outside- hiking, roadtrips, water, checking new places out.  I'd love to go to a warm beach, but I have no idea how feasible that is as I'm from the NW and all I've known is frigid ocean beaches.

Any ideas? Did I hit the parameters to get suggestions?

Re: Vacation Recs NE?

  • Well great places south of Maine and still in NE are Boston and RI.  Newport is a nice destination, great restaurants, easy town to walk around in and stay busy.

But if you are looking for a beach you can actually get to, you might want to go further south to Virginia or to Myrtle Beach SC.

Is the beach more important for your vacation?

  • Yeah, May isn't really beach weather yet in New England, so if you want to do a lot of swimming and beaching, NE in May isn't probably going to work. Although, I have been to the beach in May multiple times in May, I just wouldn't plan a vacation around it. I agree with pp to maybe go more south to Myrtle Beach or even Hilton Head if you want the beach.

May is a lovely time in New England with lots to do... you can catch a red sox game at Fenway, walk the beaches of the Cape, do a day Trip to Newport or Salem, MA. I just wouldn't plan on a beach vacation in NE in May.

  • Ogunquit Maine has a great beach that's easy to walk to or take a trolley depending on where you stay. You can also walk or picnic along the ocean on "The Marginal Way" . It's an easy walk to Perkins Cove which has great shops and restaurants.
Watch Hill, Rhode Island has a great beach and there are lots of things to do like visit block island, Point Judith light house, Bike ride, etc.
You could also go Whale watching in Narragansett.
Driving or walking along Beach Rhode and Ocean Drive in Newport, Rhode Island is beautiful. You can stop somewhere to picnic and watch the sunset over the ocean.
We have these places on rotation and go every year!
  • I love the cape and Martha's Vineyard, but I agree that May might not be the best month for warm beach days.  We went in May a couple of years ago and we never once sat out on a beach, it was in the 60s most days.
